First time BLW, lots of vomitting, normal??

My ds is 6 months today so I gave him his first solids - some carrot and banana 'chips' - at tea time. He had a really good go at licking them and shoving them in his mouth but then really gagged and brought up a big piece followed by vomitting 3 or 4 times.

Is this his normal gag reflex? Can I expect this much vomit every time?

TIA for any help for a very nervous first timer!

Hi there Pixsix. I have been doing BLW for a couple of weeks (for the first time, last baby had mush!) and the gag reflex thingy is totally normal.

Mine hasn't puked much but then he rarely does - only really done it once when he had a virus.

Have you read/got Gill Rapley's book? It's brilliant and really reasurring! Amazon have it in stock i think.

Basically you need to make sure you let the baby pick up the food - don't try and 'help' by posting food in his mouth for him (like I did as he might choke! The gag reflex will ease off over time as he figures it out and becomes better at controlling food in his mouth. My DS has already stopped gagging as much as at the start.

Maybe try softer foods to start eg boiled veg or roasted sweet potato chips? This might be less of a shock to his system? Fruit like mango and strawberries seem to be popular too.

COme and join us on the other thread. Don't know how to link to it, we are under weaning 'anyone starting BLW soon...'

Hope this helps!
