Alternatives to baby rice??

I have just started weaning DS (24 weeks) and I want to start with predominantly fruit and veggies but I want to add them to something with a bit of substance (seems to make sense to give him something which will also fill him up a little and weaken the fruit so its easier on his system??). A lot of people advice using baby rice to start with but I have also heard it is not very nutritious. Is there anything else out there which might be a better addition?

Thanks

organix do wholewheat baby rice which is tastier and I guess better for them. I use it in preference to the heinz stuff. Plum does a 4 grain porridge - tho my baby didn't like it. Heinz porridge is nice and smooth. Hipporganic is a bit more textured, better for when they're 7mo.

we're at the same stage with dd- babyrice is like wallpaper paste but i do find it a good thickener. I tend to mix the fruit with baby cereals of different flavours for variety but things like butternut squash and sweet potato seem quite bulky on their own and i've just started combining them with other veggies. Will look out for the organix rice tho.

I actually used the Plum 4 grain porridge today mixed with some formula and pear puree but then I got worried I wasn't supposed to as everywhere says use baby rice. So this is ok to use??

DS seemed to like it!

I think the plum 4 grain is fine for weaning and gluten free - ds wasn't that keen but was fine with apple or pear puree added. I didn't buy a second packet once I had finished it though. It doesn't have as smooth a texture as baby rice. Ds liked the organix baby rice too and I still use it for bulking out other homemade purees.

No problem that i can see - the weaning advice is to use first fruits, veg and cerals so no problem combining them to suit baby's tastes (the only rule being to start off with gluten free cereals).

True - I'm on my third and still feeling my way! Have you got the Annabel Karmel Baby and Toddler Meal Planner book? I used it with my two older children and just re-ordered it for dd as it tells you what to make and when!
