hi,

My DD is 5.5 months old, but was 6 weeks prem, so I'm thinking I should be thinking about weaning now-ish (the advice for prem babies is to start between 5-7 months)

So, I gave my DD some baby rice on saturday ... I didn't really expect her to eat any of it, thought she could just have some fun smearing it around face/walls/clothes! She didn't seem that impressed by it, or to find it as much fun as I'd hoped, but to my amazement a couple of spoonfuls seemed to not end up dribbling down her chin & actually stayed in her mouth & possibly went down her throat!

However... that night she woke up roughly every 3 hours, which is very strange for her as the little angel is usually asleep from 8pm until 7am, and was a severe shock to the system for me!

Do you think it's just coincidence, a sign that she's not ready for weaning yet, or was she just having exciting dreams about rice?! She slept OK last night so I thought I might wait until next weekend before I try again...

Well the food will be different to digest which may have kept her awake.

I would wait until 6 months, and I'd also skip the baby rice. 'Tis horrid and bland - give her something yummy

my DS wasn't early but had a weird reaction to baby rice. he was awake in the night with terrible pain / wind / constipation every time we gave it to him (usually very good sleeper). This may not be the case with your DD but thought i would mention it in case. HV said it was very unusual not to be able to tolerate baby rice, but he was fine when given fruit and veg instead.
DD really loves baby rice though, no such problems. perhaps stop or just try something different like pureed veg / pear?

Baby rice is like wallpaper paste. It has very little nutritional value, you may as well give them wallpaper to eat. It's purpose is not that of food to keep them full but as a different texture to introduce them to food. Did you give her some milk after?
