Feel terrible. Started weaning bit early and now ds got diarrohea and nappy rash...

...my ds is five and a half months and about a week ago, started grabbing my food and looking hungry, so i started him on some simple things, the odd piece of broccoli, sucking chunks of cucumber (which he loves), baby rice and mashed pumpkin/carrot/sweet potato. Then yesterday, after he wolfed down a couple of tablespoons full of mushed pumpkin, he started getting diarrohea, which has led to nappy rash. Today he's been pooing almost every hour and it's horrible and mucusy and bubbly and nasty. His nappy rash looks sore too. I feel bad for starting too soon. Has anyone else had this?

lay off the food for a bit then if you're worried.
don't feel bad, he could be teething!

It could just be a tummy bug though and complete coincidence that he'd had some pumpkin. In fact, I'd say it was unlikely to have been the pumpkin given that he'd had it before without any problems.

he has a tummy bug; nothing to do with you weaning just a couple of weeks early. take him to your GP tomorrow if he is still unwell, or seek medical attention earlier if he shows any signs of becoming dehydrated. But rest assured this is not your fault !

I really doubt it is caused by weaning at 24 weeks rather than 26 - the guideline is for around 6 months not bang on exactly for every baby. There has been lots going around making babies ill...he could just not like pumpkin...it could be a complete coincidence...it could have happened if he was 9 months old.

Really, dont feel bad (although I know its only natural)

thank you for all these comments. i feel much reassured. it's just a horrible feeling seeing your lo suffer and wondering if you could have prevented it. i think i'm going to go back to baby rice, breastmilk and nothing more for a few days and then wean more slowly. introducing one food at a time so i know if anything upsets him.
