Weaning spoons and things - what is the point of a "foon"?

Just looking through the Boots weaning section and have seen 2 things which made me laugh.

Firstly a bendy spoon which claims to help with baby-led weaning

But also this "spoon and foon set" from Annabel Karmel. I am perplexed. What possible use has the foon got? And what happened to the good old spork?

I can kind of see the gimick of the first one - but surely it would teach them to eat at an angle...Im not sure.

But that second one?! Whats that about?!

why would you need to ease a transition to a fork? Both my boys have preferred forks from the beginning as they can "stab" their food to get it in.

BorgLady · 10/03/2009 20:31

LOL, I saw the foon the other day too and have been puzzled by it ever since! What on earth is it for? It seems totally useless to me ... please someone enlighten us!

SoupDragon · 10/03/2009 20:33

Probably due to Health and Safety, they have had to join together the nasty, dangerous points at the end of the fork.

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2009 20:42

presumably the first helps with BLW because it's flexibility means that you can't feed your child if they don't want to.
The foon looks like a slotted spoon "like a spoon, but not as useful"

wastingmyeducation · 10/03/2009 20:44

It's not even a spork is it?!

rolandbrowning · 10/03/2009 20:46

Maybe the foon is for if your baby is boiling a tiny egg?

StealthPolarBear · 10/03/2009 20:49

yes! A quail's egg!
or eating soup, but doesn't like the wet bits

rolandbrowning · 10/03/2009 20:52

It may look useless, but it obviously has many uses.

FenLondon · 10/03/2009 22:26

oh thank heavens it wasn't just me wandering what the £($%£( a foon was for...
Sounds a bit Dr Seuss'y really?

The foon is "specially designed to encourage your child to feed themselves" so maybe we need to ask a child?!

I am stumped.

Horton · 11/03/2009 13:46

The foon is crazy. A spork OTOH is probably a great thing for a baby learning to feed itself. Maybe I'm very lax but I just gave mine a small fork and let her get on with it. She still has both her eyes.
