5 mo little one, having baby rice and banana once a day. Am going to try other foods, savoury things, but so far mashed potato is not a hit (has resulted in vomiting both times we tried )
I know about salt, gluten and honey, and sugar I presume, but what about cheese, egg etc? Is it all ok as long as it's cooked well and stuff?

Just about everything should be fine, however some foods are thought to be harder to process until their little tummies are used to solids.

I could write you a list, however there's so much variation between experts that no such definitive list really exists. You just have to make a decision and go for it.

I know that's a crap answer, but it's an honest answer.

So there's nothing that is banned as such? Great!

I don't think you can give lentils until about 8 months.

MrsSchmaltzyMerryHenry · 15/02/2009 23:23

Oh, why's that Cecelia?

Actually, on that score, any uber-healthy, chewing-the-cud foods are thought to be tricky to process, so maybe lentils come under that category.

CeceliaAhern · 15/02/2009 23:28

I think they are harder to digest.

I was told with DS (about 2 years ago) that shouldn't give honey or peanuts under 1 year. After a year honey fine but if either parents has a food allergy then should avoid peanut until at least 5. Guidelines may have changed though in that time...they usually change every few months

weebump · 15/02/2009 23:34

no honey till after 1 year. There's a teeny tiny risk of botulism that people over 1 can handle and babies can't.

as your lo is only 5 months old then stick to fruits/veg/gluten free cereals. After 6 months you can introduce dairy, meat, fish, well cooked egg, gluten, etc. If there is no history of allergies then nuts are ok from 6 months - if there is an history avoid till the age of 3 (no whole nuts before 5 due to the choking risk). DS had peanut butter from 9 months and my PFB dd had it from 1 year.

when is it safe to feed my baby.....?

callmemamma · 16/02/2009 21:46

I agree with Seona1973-stick with fruit/veg/babyrice.I would also be careful with eggs white till about 7 months(apparently egg yolk is fine)
