I started weaning my 6 month-old ds yesterday. I gave him baby rice mixed with EBM. I expected him to have a couple of spoons but he had loads! When I'd given him all I'd made (about 30ml) he wanted more so I had to breast feed him quick! How much do I give today? Keep going until he refuses more or just a small amount, like yesterday, as it's still early days?

Hiya - probably depends on loads of things, i bottle fed so knew what she was drinking, and started weaning about 20wks.
She was a big baaby so i've always wored she'd get too big if ate too much etc, but i found she stopped when full, and still now at 12 mths some days has 4 meals and loads and other days 3 but not much. she pushes spoon away when had enough or spits out, depending on her mood.
She was weighed etc last week, and perfect weight..... so whatever done its working.
I follow what a few others say and just go with your instinct as mum your ds will tell you what he wants and when!!!!
Hope that load of waffle may help

Agreed. Go with your instincts. My dd ate all the rice I prepared (1 tsp + 30ml milk) for the first two days. On day 3 she ate 1.5 Tbsp carrot puree. She generally looks away or clamps her mouth shut when she's done. Happy weaning! It's quite an adventure

Thanks guys. I gave him twice as much as yesterday and he scoffed the lot. He had a much shorter time on the breast afterwards though. Tomorrow dh will be home to help with the day three carrot!

The week I started weaning ds seemed to be really hungry so I gave him a lot more than I expected but in subsequent weeks he has been happy with less than in that first week! I tend to base the amounts I'm giving on how hungry he was at the last breastfeed as I don't want him to cut back on feeds just yet.

i would offer breast before food, milk is still the main source of nutrition at this stage
