i went to buy some organice rice to make my own but couldn't find any?
do i use pudding rice or should i stay clear of baby rice altogether?
i've bought organic boots rice but am not sure if i want to use it after reading other posts. Also is it "normal" when first weaning that they eat a whole banana and pear (both mushed up?)in one sitting
the books seem to imply they will only take a teaspoon for the first few weeks?

not sure about making baby rice, but I remember the boots rice being awful, it was like wallpaper paste.

The Organix one was much nicer, better texture and tasted OK once some fruit was added to it..

I bought the Hipp organic one, it's fine... the thing is, baby rice is extremely bland & king of blaaaaaahhh altogether.

As for the quantities, no, it really depends on the baby, some babies increase quantities a bit more quickly than others. I started my boy 5 days ago (he's almost 25 weeks) on 1 teaspoon of baby rice for lunch, but he gobbled it up so quickly that we're now up to 3-4 teaspoons. Obviously don't overdo it & go slowly at first... but at the same time, you can kind of follow your baby's appetite as well.

Do you actually want to give baby rice, or is it that you feel you have to? It isn't obligatory! Many people choose to go down the puree route but just start with fruit / vegetables instead of baby rice (because it's such nasty flavourless stuff).

Other people go straight to finger foods and don't do purees at all (BLW).

I gave both of mine baby rice but always mixed with mashed banana or stewed apple etc.

Babies appetites vary and take to weaning in very different ways so although a whole banana and a pear may seem a lot I wouldn't worry (your baby may even only manage a tiny portion next time, it can take them a while to get used to tastes, textures etc)

Yes, I also mix the baby rice with pear & my baby seems to love it... it kind of bulks up the pear... and then the pear makes the baby rice more palatable. But no, you don't HAVE to give baby rice, of course not, but I think it's a good choice to bulk things up a bit.

Go to your local health shop and get a bag of brown rice flakes.
Add water and cook for a few minutes.
Then puree.
It has many more vitamins etc than white rice (or white baby rice).

Simmer some dried apricots or dried prunes or stew some apples.
Puree (you will probably have to add a little water to the prunes/apricot as you puree, they are quite thick.

Mix some of the fruit and some of the pureed rice flakes together.
Freeze in suitable portions for 3 easy varieties of "baby rice"

thanks all for replies
just not sure about baby rice
annable karmel's book says just buy white refined rice and make your own but i can't seem to find any organic rice
i just think that a pear or an apple won't fill him up but baby rice mixed with pear or apple would.
i've tried blw but he can't pick food up (i know the idea is if he can't he's not ready but he's prem so think it's a bit different)

I made ds2's baby rice. It was easy. I used organic brown rice. Toast it in an iron skillet to make it iron fortified (use just a tiny bit of oil so it doesn't burn), then grind it in a food processor. Cook on stovetop in pot with ebm. Freeze in ice cube tray for single servings and you're done!

MegBusset · 21/01/2009 18:38

I never bothered with baby rice. Food at this stage isn't to 'fill them up', it's for them to explore new tastes and textures. And seeing as baby rice has neither of those, always seemed pointless to me!
