When can I give DS hummous? Also, any good dairy-free pasta sauce recipes?

Two questions in one post really, but hopefully someone has some ideas!

Thanks!

I've been giving DS home-made salt free hummous already (6.5 months). Although there are some sources that say to avoid sesame seeds I think (in the tahini when I make the home-made version)

Re. dairy - are you avoiding dairy due to allergies?

Isaidno · 13/01/2009 13:01

hummous ok from 6th mths, unless you have allergy problems in the family as sesame is a common allergen.

can use any veg puree as a pasta sauce; my ds used to like lentils with pasta.

I gave ds hummous from about as soon as he was eating food (ca. 6months iirc).

A tin of tomatoes, a wee bit of tomato paste and splash of balsamic vinegar, mixed herbs is a good basic tomato pasta sauce recipe. Add spinach if you like.

I also make a big pot of ratatouille (red peppers, courgette, aubergine, mushroom, onions, tinned tomatoes and tom paste) and then blend it down to make a pasta sauce.

allnew - agree hummous can be salty but I only give my 7mth old a scraping.

maybe you were thinkin of taramasalata which is cod roe

hummous is just chick peas so will be fine

didn't realise it had sesame in it

By the way, how long does tahini keep in the fridge? (have opened jar there, wondering about making hummous for 7.5 month old)

MamaHobgoblin · 15/01/2009 13:56

tahini keeps for months, although I suppose I should be less cavalier about it when it's feeding my baby! You don't need so much for hummous, so a jar lasts and lasts. I think you can put it in Baba Ganoush (aubergine dip) too though, which your baby might like. Or you might like it!

I'm guilty of giving DS shop hummous (with evil SALT!) occasionally, but then I make sure he's not having anything else salty that day.
