is it ok to let him have stuff? we were going to do BLW anyway, seems like he is determined to start a little early....if it's better to wait until 6 months though i will

he is large baby, was 2 weeks overdue, can't sit unaided properly (slumps), getting good fine motor control, was able to grab a crust and suck it and bits were going down i believe

i believe he is not meant to have wheat? so took crust away and gave a rice cake
which was sucked with gay abandon

so what happens now?
aitch? anyone?
i will be brave and go back on th blw forum btw but i just got a bit shy

I have no experience, but it sounds as though he's made the decision for you.

souns good to me Franny but I'm no expert. Am though. DD 8 months screams at sight of food. I would avoid gluten till 12 months tho personally so think you did right thing with crust.

ruddynorah · 02/01/2009 13:27

i'd say it's fine. try him with some veg later, rather than the bread. if he can pick it up and swallow bits then go for it. he won't eat much at this stage anyway.

ruty · 02/01/2009 13:29

banana fairly innocuous? Aitch's blw forum mine of information tho.

stealthsquiggle · 02/01/2009 13:30

DD did this at about the same age - grabbed (lovely home-made) chips off my plate at the pub - I took the hint and started her with 'proper' food with random disorganised combination of mush (not baby rice as it is too disgusting for words IMHO) and BLW. I found a bumbo very useful until she stopped 'slumping' (get a 2nd hand one - they are indestructible and you don't need them for long)

yes will go on there later
just nice on here where you know people innit?
thanks for replies

That's how my DS2 started! Much the easiest way. I used to put the nickable food on the side of my plate nearest him and didn't eat anything unsuitable when he was on my knee. Mind you, with a big brother he saw being in his highchair as a mark of respect.

nappyaddict · 02/01/2009 13:38

Until he can sit up unaided either just have him on your knee or put him in a highchair with a cushion or blanket for support so he doesn't slump.

SilverSixpence · 02/01/2009 13:39

sounds fine, DS is a week short of 6 months and has been trying to swipe food for a good few weeks but I resisted until now.

FrannyandZooey · 02/01/2009 14:00

ruty why no gluten till 12 months?
thanks for all advice

it is just not very easily absorbed and can cause gut/digestive problems. However most children fine with it, mine aren't. They recommend not till 6 months don't they. After that probably fine for most babies.

thanks ruty
