Cups with spouts

How do you get a 6mo to start using a spouted cup?? Tried to give her some water from one this afternoon and she just held it in her mouth. If I leave the valve in she doesn't know to suck, if I take the valve out she just has a mouth full of water that she lets dribble out of her mouth?? She started taking little mouthfuls of water from a doidy cup, shall I just stick with that?

We tried loads and loads before we found one that suited ds. Is the spout hard because my ds still won't drink from a hard spout at 16m.
i don't know what a doidy cup is but if it works......

persistence! It tooks our first ages to ge the idea, and he never got the hang of valved ones. Doidy cups are quite good. I found the best thing was that for younger ones you could see where the water level was when you were sitting infront of them at the highchair offering them a drink. definitely not no-spill though!

Oh, bump, I've basically asked the same question!

I found the tomee tippee ones good to start with as it only comes out in drips till they get used to it but they do get something IYSWIM? these

2 months in and DD is only just beginning to get that the idea is to suck on the spout and to swallow the water. It has taken a lot of patience - we offer water at every meal. And yesterday, for the first time, she held the cup with two hands and drank from it herself. Probably won't happen again now for ages, but we had progress!

mis read this as cups with sprouts...but I have used avent ones with little success so far (then dd is remarkably resistant to all things weaning related) link

sprouts LOL!
Well she will drink from it if I take the valve out and pour it into her mouth today but no sucking as yet - will persist
cheers ladies

We have tried lots - had a little success with the tommee tippee first cup - but most recently got a tommeee tippee 'Nuby' Tip it up? trainer cup www.lloydspharmacy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=958&storeId=90&productId=3 07693&langId=-1&parentcategoryrn=17787&top=&top_category=14215

the spout is soft like the teat of a bottle, but works like the non-spill valve on other cups - so it doesnt leak but dd is able to get water out - admittedly she doesnt seem to be drinking much at the moment but is getting it out and drinking some! is really the only thing we have found her willing to suck/sip from! - her cousin used a similar one and after getting the hang of it moved really easily on to the other non-spill valved ones as they work in the same way!
