How to encourage 13mth old to use spoon

My 13mth DS has been weaned with purees, progressing to lumpier food. Is on 'normal' food and has been for since about 9 months old, with a very healthy appetite!
He is great at finger food and will eat from a spoon if it is fully loaded with food and handed to him / put on tray in front of him.
I have tried giving him the bowl to 'dig in' with spoon, at which point he sticks his fingers in and then licks his fingers / throws on floor etc etc.
Am I trying the whole spoon thing too early? Or should I be encouraging him to use the spoon to get food from the bowl.
Thinking yoghurts/porridge etc ...
Thanks

dd started using a spoon herself at around 18 months (though apparently a bit sooner at the CM's!)

so yes maybe a bit early
don't worry, if he's not into it try again in a month or two. No rush!

I give ds (15m) a fromage frais in the morning and a spoon and he can't really do it. Breakfast is the only meal I spoon feed and he has things he an eat with his hands for other meals as he has gone off "wet" food. I give him a fork with his dinner but he won't use it, far too slow!

That's so reassuring, thank you so much. I'll leave things for a while then.
