You just do them the same as chicken nuggets ie dip in egg then dip in breadcrumbs. I would use cod as it isn't as flaky as other white fish. You can only really use the loin as the rest is too thin.

Speaking as someone who makes virtually everything from scratch I wouldn't bother as frozen ones will keep their shape better for finger food, contain no added crap, and will be nutritionally better as will proportionately contain a higher percentage of fish due to the thinness of the breadcrumb layer.

I was about to say before MMS, I just use birds eye ones, they have a surprisingly low amount of salt and crap in.

any fish you like really - oily is better for them, but in my experience, children don't like it very much.

Try crushed cornflakes instead of breadcrumbs sometimes - it makes a nice change.

Agree - absolutely no need to make your own fishfingers (and I also cook 90% of meals from scratch and avoid processed food)

combustiblelemon · 15/11/2008 23:32

I make them myself ever since the dog ate one that fell on the floor and was hyperactive for 2 hours.

stepfordknife · 15/11/2008 23:42

Seriously?

Tbh CL I doubt it had anything to do with the fishfinger. There is nothing 'insane making' in them. Perhaps your dog was just feeling skittish!

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/11/2008 13:19

i make my own - but also use bird eye ones

i use either salmon or cod - dip in beaten egg and then in breadcrumbs

sometimes i use crushed crunchy nut cornflakes for different taste

I've got a whole bag of salmon ones I made myself in the freezer. My 8 months old dd LOVES them (and the cats are pretty keen on them too )

TheGoat · 17/11/2008 12:51

if you are really keen there are lots of recipes for home made baked beans on here.

We eat the Birdseye Omega 3 ones - no weird ingredients, reasonable salt levels.

Plus they are pollock not cod which has some (though not high) Omega 3 levels, and isn't as overfished as cod..

kalo12 · 24/11/2008 10:39

these birds eye fish fingers do they contain egg? is it possible to make them without?

skidoodle · 30/11/2008 09:58

so fish is ok for 8 mo? Just looking for ideas fora bit offish I have for dd and ended up on a site that said no fish until a year!

seeker · 30/11/2008 10:02

Really? Mine had fish but no other meat until the were 18 months or so! I know they souldn't have shell fish and I discovered too lat that they shouldn't have prawns until they are 12 months, but apart from that I don't think there's a problem with fish.

sumomum · 30/11/2008 10:19

Birds eye have recently added salmon fingers to their range, haven't tried them yet though.
