can you give me some ideas for nutritious sauces on pasta for blw please? I usually use jars of pasta sauce so will need to get round to actually making some i guess!

a little bit of pesto goes down well with mine.

I always used to make a tomato based sauce or cheese sauce.

Gently fry onion, garlic, pepper and mushrooms add tin of chopped tomatoes, squirt of tomato puree and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Blitz if need be and add to pasta.

Cheese sauce made with butter (melted) add tablespoon of flour, cook out for 1 minute and slowly add milk until thickens and then add cheese. You can always add more milk if it is too thick.

I used to add tuna and sweetcorn to the cheesesauce and cook for a further couple of minutes. It was a favourite of my DS's.

oho, yes you doooooo.

this is easy-peasy, properly roman and you add other stuff to it when you feel inclined.

one onion, finely chopped and sweated in a good amount of olive oil. be generous.
then fling in a couple of slices of smoked bacon. (or don't if you're super-worried about salt. but i always did) .

then once that's mulched down nicely and the onions are all clear and yummy, two cans of toms, plus some water (fill the two cans up to rinse the tom out and throw the whol lot in) and then leave to simmer for... hours until it's all lovely and squashy.

that's my basic sauce. add anything.

bolognese not too dissimilar except i finely chop carrot and celery as well and put it in to sweat once the onion's cooked, then the mince to brown, then the toms etc.

lots of good recipes at www.babyledweaning.com

very easy peasy one - philadelphia cheese with some pureed veg. i started off on purees but abandoned them quickly and now do a great courgette and philly pasta sauce from the courgette puree that never got eaten - i usually stir in some parmesan and spinach and ground pepper as well.

also just made him a lentil and tomato one which was very successful and he's having it just as soon as i get off mn... will dig it out and post it.

pasta sauces also make great pitta pizzas - spread inside of pitta pocket with sauce, add grated cheese thne toast in toaster. cut into strips, and voila, your baby is eating pizza!

HolidaysQueen · 13/11/2008 11:27

just realised that sounds like i'll be sending you DS's leftover lunch via the royal mail will find the recipe and type it up

IHeartIona · 13/11/2008 11:28

yum at the pitta pizzas HQ! I fancy those for lunch too!

Iona - we often have pitta pizzas together - they're yum!

FaintlyMacabre · 13/11/2008 12:33

Fresh tomato, frozen (or fresh) spinach, garlic, dollop of Philadelphia.
Goes down very well around here.

IHeartIona · 13/11/2008 14:47

great those philly recipes sound good and quick too!

3 main ones - pesto, tomatoey (like aitch's) and cheese sauce (I use this recipe and freeze it in little pots to add to cooked pasta - mega easy quick meal and add green veg).
Also another tip is to use fusili so that the sauce stays between the pasta swirls.

Aitch · 13/11/2008 19:49

tonight we had pesto, tuna and green beans with a squirt of lemon and some lemon rind in the pesto. yum, and the work of five minutes.

deaconblue · 13/11/2008 20:16

sorry to hijack but what age did your lo's manage to eat pasta? Dd has had pasta a couple of times a week for the past 3 weeks and so far just sucks the sauce off it. Doesn't seem to be able to gum it like she can potato and veg. she's 6 1/2 months

giddykipper · 13/11/2008 20:20

Pesto, philadelphia and peas is always a success

Cheddar melted in the microwave with some cream makes a good mac and cheese sauce

Carbonara - mix an egg with some cream and cheese, pour onto the pasta, carry on cooking until the egg sets

Maveta · 13/11/2008 20:29

I also do plain tomato sauce or cheese (although cheese has varying success with ds) and the best is ratatouille, I make up a job lot of the stuff and then either give it to him all lumpy with the pasta or whizz it down to a smooth pasta sauce. He loves it and it has everything in one hit (I have no idea if it is ´proper´ ratatouille or not, I bung in onions, garlic, red pepper, yellow pepper if I have it, courgette, eggplant, tomatoes and cook for at least an hour or until I remember to turn it off ).

And another great one is get a butternut squash, wrap in foil, bung in oven for an hour, when it comes out just scoop out the insides and freeze in portions. Then you just just reheat, add to pasta with some philadelphia or creme fraiche mix it all up and it makes a great pasta sauce.

Keeping an eye on this thread for recipes too

For very little ones:

Tin of toms, 2 handfuls of Spinich and 1 tbsp pesto (use the rest for your Dinner).

Simmer until spinich wilts then blitz and freeze in 1/2 tbsp quantities (large ice cube trays are good).

Just nuke in the microwave and stir into freshly cooked pasta.

DD still eats this but I now vary it with Peppers and onions etc.

She also like some grated cheese stirred into it.

HolidaysQueen · 13/11/2008 21:52

shoppingbags - my DS is 7.5mo and has probably been having pasta happily for 2-3 weeks.

Milkycheeks · 13/11/2008 22:02

I roasted some root veg for dd as part of a meal but she turned her nose up at them, so i whizzed them them up a bit in the food processor and froze in ice-cube trays. I now stir a few portions into pasta along with lots of cheese & a bit of parsley & she wolfs it down

Thomcat · 13/11/2008 22:04

I made a chicken liver pasta sauce for DD3 today. Made me feel sick but she loved it.

It was onion, red pepper, chicken livers, chicken stock, tomato puree.
