When can I give anything other than fruit/veg?

DS is 25 weeks, we have just started blw but only fruit and veg. I am confused as to when I can introduce other foods, some threads here say anything (almost) from 6mo, and some say no meat at 6mo?
what do you all do?

pretty much anything now he is 6 months
blw is great

misscathcart · 11/11/2008 08:34

yep, most things now

At 6 months, pretty much anything. I think I counted 6 months as 26 weeks. Dd loved meat from the start - she'd grab a piece of beef and gum it into submission (it took a while but also kept her occupied long enough for me and dp to eat dinner, so all good)

Ok thanks, I'll keep with just fruit/veg for another week or so then start to try some other things!
I was surprised he started actually eating some straight away (24+5), I thought he'd just play with it for a bit but he really got stuck in!

Can someone explain to me why yu can introduce any foods at 6mths if you are BLW, but if you are doing purees, even if you start at 6mths, then you are advised not to introduce protein until about 7mths once baby has tried lots of different fruits and veg?

I can understand if you are weaning at 4mths why it should only be fruit and veg but if you are doing purees at 6 mths (like we are to start with), then everything I have read says that you should wait for about 3/4 wks to introduce protein?

Confused as always re everything to do with babies!

Becky77 · 11/11/2008 09:59

I thought if you start purees at 6 months it was ok to fast track a bit?

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/11/2008 10:24

pudding - i think they say to wait for 3/4 weeks to have meat if weaning at 6mth to make sure there is no reaction

also their little tummies have had nothing but milk for 6 months so they need to be able to digest fruit and veg then move on to carbs and protein

they do say to give your baby a new veg every 3 days and then make sure that there are fine with it

Blondeshavemorefun - is this for blw as well then? Still confused! I have given him 3 different veg and 2 fruit already and we've only been weaning for 4 days! He hasn't eaten much mind you, but I can see from the nappies that some is going in.

the new veg every 3 days thing is only if you're concerned about possible allergies (if no family history I wouldn't worry). Anything goes at 6 months, there's no need to hold back on types of food, only foods that have a texture that you think they couldn't handle.

pudding25 · 11/11/2008 12:22

Thanks. Suppose it makes sense to let them digest a few easy things apart from milk before they go on to something harder to digest.

I think I have the only baby who can't get enough of baby rice

Becky77 · 11/11/2008 12:49

@ pudding25 - I think you do! My DD isn't half as excited when I mix her purees with baby rice... If I don't she's flapping her arms and grabbing the spoon and kicking the bowl trying to get it in her mouth faster! And she can eat tonnes of it too!!
