One year old won't eat lumps

As the title says, my one year old won't eat lumps. All he will eat is purees albeit quite thick ones. He will eat some finger foods such as toast, biscotti biscuits but not things such as veg, pasta, fruit etc. His diet consists of purees, toast, and fromage frais and i'm starting to get a bit worried. Should I be and any tips?

I can hear BLWers everywhere gagging themselves so as not to shout TOLD YOU SO!

I guess you've probably tried making his mush gradually lumpier?

Yes have tried making his food lumpier but he spots them a mile off!! Ok, so I didn't try BLW but have tried finger foods from quite early on. He just doesn't seem to like it, well apart from toast.

Could you try cutting up veg and fruit for him to dip into something tasty like hummous or soft cheese or yoghurt (for the fruit)? That way he might accidentally eat some or at least get over the fear/rejection of it?

hi LGF.. you are certainly not alone!
My DS just turned one and is still really unhappy abt any lumps in his food. I did a mixture of BLW and purees which has worked really well for us.

At 9 months he started taking his food mashed with a fork rather than pureed, but then the dreaded first couple of teeth started to erupt and since then (painful gums and all that) he has refused lumpy foods.

Things he eats by himself...
Grapes (cut into small bits)
mini pasta bows
peas
sweetcorm
oven chips broken into small bits
toast - broken into small bits
Satsuma - sucks on a segment if i hold on to it.
Organix corn crisp thingys...

I just think some babies are just a bit slower at accepting new textures..... or thats just what i keep telling myself.

I have stopped comparing my baby with others, it just upsets and winds me up when people make judgements abt why they aren't eating lumpier food. I'm grateful and thankful that DS will eat anything given to him.. in bits or on a spoon.... i don't think it matters as long as they are happy, healthy and putting on weight at a steady rate.

maybe try your LO on a variety of finger foods and you'll see he will soon find something he likes other than toast.

Keep on pureeing his meals until he will accept lumps happily. Don't try to force him or,believe me, things could get a lot worse. You don't need to worry nutritionally because he is still eating the food, just with it pureed.

I know its a bind having to puree his food before you can sit down and eat yours, but it is the best thing to do. He will be getting used to different flavours.

Wait a couple of months and then try it a little bit lumpy. But, no tears!

will he eat things on toast such as eggs, beans, cheese spread?

Thanks all for posting your advice and suggestions

You'd think that as he eats toast then putting things on/with it would be easy but nooooo....it has to be plain buttered toast. I'll have to accept that he is fussy although would eat almost anything pureed!

Mine - I have tried most of the things you have suggested but he just throws them on the floor with the exception of the Organix crisps..he loves them (they disolve quite easily in the mouth).

Thanks again for your advice.
