can anyone help me, my 6month old has cut her first tooth which in turn is cutting me!! it's getting v sore to feed her but the prob is she has never taken to a bottle and the other cups i've tried, she just chews. would using nipple shields help her make the transition? i'm going to have to start using them i think anyway. i have started her on baby rice 10 days ago, just a bit at lunch time, offering water in various bottles/cups etc, but she drinks literally sips. is this normal? should i just persevere? until her tooth started making me sore i was happy to keep giving her breast milk but now feel it's a bit more urgent to stop bf (which i was planning to do anyway over next two months). any advice welcome (except reasons why i should keep bf for long as possible, i am well aware of this info )

We've been through several periods of teeth rubbing. My advice is to change position immediately until it heals up. It does pass after a while when they get used to the new experience. DD refused bottle or cup until about one so I've no advice there, sorry.

Gok - I've had similar problems trying to get DS (7.5 months) to drink from a bottle or cup. He loves the cup but spills most of it down himself and is equally happy holding it upside down and sucking on the bottom while the water/milk runs out!! My HV advice was to go out and leave him with someone else. She was certain that when he got hungry/thirsty and I was not around he would then take it from someone else. I haven't tried this as yet but I have heard of other people who were worried about their children being left at nursery for this reason but the DC did indeed soon learn.

IME they don't drink much from a cup initially. Probably not ideal, but I used to put a pinch of sugar into a bottle or cup,or a teaspoonful of juice,to add some interest.Once DD1 started drinking a little more decreased the amount slowly. Worked for me,anyway.

Just wanted to say that I also want to start weaning my LO (5 months) slowly off the breast and hopefully on to a cup. We're currently trying it once a day (first thing in the morning) with some fresh EBM in. He seems to take about 10 ml at the moment - does anyone who has experience of this think this sounds promising? If so, do you have any suggestion as to when I might hope to reach something approaching a full feed?
