7.5 month-old won't have lumps or any other "stage 2" food

My DS is 7.5 month old now. He progressed with weaning brilliantly so far. He loves stage 1 (totally pureed) food, but retches when he gets any small bit of fruit or veg in his meal. My heart is bleeding when he even brings up his milk. Are we too late now or too early? Shall we wait a bit?

By the way, he eats stage 2 jars in the nursery, and apparently he "scoffed" (this is an exact quote) a fruit scone today, and regularly eats bread and butter. I find this quite hard to believe. He is also happy with stage 2 breakfast cereals.

My son never liked lumpy food. He liked totally pureed stuff and he liked finger foods, but runny stuff with lumps in it? He hated it. Would gag and spit it out. Some babies just do. Maybe you could start him on some dry foods / finger foods as well as the pureed stuff?

Have you thought about other types of food her can eat with his hands, and letting him feed himself? Sometimes with wee ones it can just be them asserting their independence a bit. Try sticking a few steamed carrot sticks, some chip-shaped bits of ripe pear, or some steamed broccoli florets in front of him, let him play with them, squish them, put them in his mouth, etc. dd was weaned from 6 mo this way, and it seemed to suit her quite well. He may like the option of feeding himself a bit.

I'd say leave it and try again in a fortnight. If he's doing it at nursery he's clearly getting there.

keep offering finger food as snacks maybe? toast, bits of pancake, rice cakes?

MrsM, I can see why some babies don't like "runny stuff with lumps in it" - I suppose the lump is unexpected and so disconcerting amongst the familiar puree, whereas with finger food it's pretty obvious what the texture's going to be, iyswim?

Yes@Habbibu. To be honest, I never blamed him for not liking it! . It can be an unpleasant mixture of textures, a bit like very thin soup with little chunks in it

Thanks ever so much. I'll try finger foods instead.

You are totally right about lumps not being very pleasant.
