Help, my 6 month old cries when i give him solids :(

My 6 month old has has solids for 3 weeks now. He is happy with a variety of tastes and will happily feed himself finger food and drink from a cup, I am also giving him purees.

He starts off fine and smiles and blows raspberries etc. but he then he will suddenly get really upset. If I give him some finger food then after the puree he will settle for a bit but then gets really upset again.

He such a contented child normally it's so hard to see him so upset.

I don't know if he's had enough, if he's still hungry, or if he's frustrated as he wants to do it himself and it takes him too long, or something else.

Any advice please?

the reasons why my DS gets too upset at meal times is if he's too tired to eat, or he's too hungry and would rather just have milk. How long after milk are you offering food? It might be worth changing this to be a bit sooner then he might not be so hungry.

Breakfast is usually 1 hour after milk. but in the afternoon i am doing it when he'd be due a milk feed so maybe i should go back to offering him some milk first then solids?

Maybe just stop with the puree. DD happily ate finger food and nothing else. Have you seen Aitch's blog?

I would definitely give him the milk first. I really wouldn't worry about it at 6 months if he isn't eating much, most of his calories should be coming from milk anyway.

I did blw with my third and it was so much easier and nicer, messier but more enjoyable for him. I think I have photos of him on my profile of when he was weaning.

for the afternoon, i'd definitely give milk first then food. perhaps reduce the gap to 45mins so your LO is not too hungry to eat solids?

We started with BLW as we've got a strong history of allergies in our family and i wanted to be absolutely sure he was ready. However I'm still introducing thing slowly so currently hes only on veg, fruit and rice and he's just started some dairy.

Currently i'm fining BLW harder not easier as i can do purees in batches or use a jar i i need to. unfortunately due to other issues i am not managing to cook properly for DH and me so i can't just give LO some of what we're eating. if i was fully BLW he'd be only having rice cakes and runner beans or squash!

i will try some milk first. he definitely likes feeding himself but he also gets upset then too. i think his hands don't do what he wants them to!

Our LO is a bit like this, and we think it's because he gets fed up being strapped into the highchair. If there's something in the room to distract him (tv on, people talking etc), or I sing to him when he gets upset he calms immediately and will happily eat more.
