sounds stupid because this time last year I was doing it with ds but I have totally forgotton how to do it and am really struggling.
She spits it out. How do I actually get her to eat it? Help please?

How old is she? If she's spitting it out then she's not ready for it, it's the tongue thrust reflex. Can she sit unsupported?

scorpio1 · 23/10/2008 20:02

if she is spitting it out she doesn't like it.

Have you thought about BLW?

lulumama · 23/10/2008 20:04

she is not yet 6 months is she? if she is spitting it out maybe she is not ready. if she is using her tongue to push it out, it is a sign she is not ready

you need to see if she is:

sitting unaided with good head control
has a good pincer grip
can pick up a piece of food get it to her mouth , chew and swallow

www.kellymom.com has excellent advice on weaning

waking in the night and wanting more milk are not signs of readiness for weaning

offer more milk and mabye hungry baby milk if she is feeding more frequently and draining a full bottle every time

K999 · 23/10/2008 20:07

I would avoid hungry baby milk - it made dd1 very constipated and unsettled. I never used it on dd2 and I started weaning her at 5 months. She never ate very much but was getting pretty much all of her nutritional needs from milk so I wasn't that concerned.....try BLW - its great. I did this with dd2 and it worked a treat!

spookycharlotte121 · 23/10/2008 20:12

she is 20 weeks. She can just about sit unaided and has very good control of her head.

I dont know what BLW is im afraid. DD is bottle fed and drinking between 7 and 9 oz at each feed 5 times a day. she sleeps through the night. She just seems hungry and not satisfied with just milk.

Does the hungry baby stuff work? She has quite a sensitive tummy so Im slightly worried this might make her sick. I sound like a crap mother lol.... maybe she isnt ready.

I remember being offered the same advice and you girls were so right. My DS is 7 months and weaning is progressing slowly (I thought he was ready at 17 weeks but it was a growth spurt). Yes, how old?

AnarchyAunt · 23/10/2008 20:14

Can she have an extra milk feed fitted in there somewhere, or just more at a time if she is till hungry?

lulumama · 23/10/2008 20:14

five feeds a day is not a massive amount

what makes you think she is hungry?

if she is , offer another feed

basically BLW is offering your DD bits of finger food. no need for puree or mush

MadameCheese · 23/10/2008 20:14

You are not crap!

scorpio1 · 23/10/2008 20:17

It's not you being crap - i've had 3 babies and still ask for advice!!

I am doing BLWing with my daughter. You basically just shove big lumps infront of them and they feed themselves

scorpio1 · 23/10/2008 20:18

hungry baby stuff does work, yes.

If she is unsettled, is she tired or wanting entertaining? Babies can be so hard to read!

MadameCheese · 23/10/2008 20:21

Actually I tried BLW with DS and he's not that interested. Prefers purees which are smooth and sloppy (rubbish)

spookycharlotte121 · 23/10/2008 20:22

oooh I like that sound of shoving it infront of her and letting her do it herself!!! That sounds like fun.

what is BLW?

lulumama linked to a baby led weaning site charlotte, bit further down

lulumama · 23/10/2008 20:26

baby led weaning, see the website i linked to

BUT if she is hungry, milk is the most filling and nutritious food you can give

an extra bottle is more calorific and filling than some steamed veg

at this eraly stage if she does eat any food, it is more for exploring tastes and textures than satisfying her hunger

food is for fun until you are one!

right have just read about blw and think it sounds good so Im guessing i need to wait a bit and let dd's hand and eye co-ordination develop and offer her food around christmas time. What sort of food do you offer with BLW?

OP posts:
CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 23/10/2008 20:26

Baby led weaning. Just giving them bits of your food like roasted sticks of veg and letting them get on with it. The site lulumama's linked to will give you all the info you need to know.

spookycharlotte121 · 23/10/2008 20:27

sorry being dumb again and didnt see the link i shall take a look now.

OP posts:
lulumama · 23/10/2008 20:27

pretty much anything you eat

start with chunks of steamed veg and fruit. rice cakes, , stuff like that.

spookycharlotte121 · 23/10/2008 20:29

so they wont choak on it?

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 23/10/2008 20:32

they do gag for a little while - Mimi has been BLW for about 3 weeks and she doesn't anymore. Hang on i will link some pics of her eating

scorpio1 · 23/10/2008 20:33

Mimi

See the sizes of the food? Like for dinner tonight she ate 2 baby parsnips and a boiled potato

You can do ricecakes, bananas, carrot sticks, mango, all sorts!

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 23/10/2008 20:35

Yes they gag a little bit but choking is very rare. A baby's gag reflex area is at the back of their mouth and it moves down the throat as you get older. So a baby will gag before any food reaches their throat. It's really fun, I still love watching DD digging her hands into a bit of my dinner and enjoying it and she's 14 months It's great watching them interact with their food and you get some funny messy pics!

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 23/10/2008 20:36

scorpio she looks fab with the kiwi Will see if I can find a good one of DD.
