What TF do I put in DS's sandwiches?

He is finally finger feeding well enough to give him a sandwich for tea, woohoo .

BUT

If I keep to the "protein for lunch and carbohydrates for tea" rule, then WTF can I put in his sandwhich? Not that I particularly love rules you understand, but this one seems to be working well and I am so excited at have the no cook option at the end of a knackering tiring day, easily prepared in advance, doable in transit, blah blah. He loved tomato puree and grated cheddar tonight, but not sure that is particularly nutritious and healthy?

Any (polite) suggestions appreciated.

PS where did you find that rule from? I used to only give protein once a day but now DS gets all sorts!

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys!

Problem is, DS is only 8m and can't cope with crunchy stuff like cucumber/tomato (only just cutting first tooth) and most of the other suggestions sound great, but they contain protein. I can't remember where I read it now, but I thought LOs protein was supposed to be limited to 1 portion a day, at risk of damaging kidneys. Do you think its rubbish then? Should I just give him protein with every meal then?

...it seems the once a day protein thing isn't set in stone, if you do a search for 'protein' and lok under the weaning section you will find lots of answers saying it's fine to give protien >1 x a day.

I give DS (11 months) protein several times a day now

My Birth to 5 book says that 1-2 servings of protein a day from 9 months. It also says to give carbohydrates and fruit/veg at every meal.
Doesn't give any guidance on types/quantities of food at 8 months, though, sorry.

huh? protein and carb rule? well i've doneuntold damage then, dd loves fish n chips, for lunch or tea.

Thanks for the info ...Sleeves. Think will follow Faintly Macabre's book and give it another couple of weeks until he is 9mo, and then step up the protein a bit. He loves eggs bless him, so omlette sounds like a fab option.

Ruddynorah - I think its more to stop digestion problems possibly interfering with sleep at night, but am thinking of switching him to protein in the evenings soon anyway, as I love this "just shove some of my dinner in his bowl" business!

Sandwich suggestions without protein - mashed banana? Marmite (v thinly spread obviously) Veg pate

LOL ProvincialLady at slimming - reminds me, must try and get some of this salt-free marmite I've heard about.

I used to give my daughter lots and lots of milky something with protein for tea as I was convinced she slept better overnight for a really filling meal. I had no idea there was a rule!

If protein turns out to be okay, sardines or tuna have always been v popular in this house.
