How old were your dear babies when they started using a spoon?

Just wonder. My ds is nearly 9 months and doesn;t want to be fed from a spoon by me. Is it time to try him with his own? Mind you he usually plays with it but not sure if he will use it to feed himself?

hmm ds is 11 months and is terrible with a spoon, sticks it in his eyes and cries, chews it, throws it. anything but put food on it, I know he's got to learn though. We're on holiday next week so we're going to have a self feeding masterclass. I'm going to sit him outside naked but for a nappy, in a plastic high chair and let him get on with it. I will report back on any success we have

About 7 months each time. Try giving him one and you having one, it seems to distract them enough for your to pop food in - or have finger food for him - to keerp hishands busy/to dip. Wear a platic apron and cover the floor!

Hi zuzkah - you don't have to use spoons at all, a lot of people on this board are now doing baby-led weaning which means doing 100% self-feeding, initially with hands not with spoons at all. If DS can't hold a spoon yet you could do this until he can?

Ds is nearly 8 months and has been using a spoon about a month - not very well but he does have a go! I have to load it for him with sticky things as he does like to wave it about! He will allow me to spoon feed him but he always has to have his own spoon to hold! I have been doing a mixture of BLW and spoonfeeding. I think that may make a difference, IYSWIM!

ds1 - 2.5 (not a coordinated child)
ds2 13 months surprisngly neatly (thinks porridge too nice to waste)

dd was very early, about 6/7 months.
ds is now 13 months and still has no idea!

Have you tried having one for you and one for him? I got to try this for a little while only, as it got v messy (of course) and then dh (who was going through a 4yr period of being a total arse!) forbade it - "she can't have a spoon until she knows how to use it" wtf?!

He was always there. He checked on everything I did, and everything I did was wrong!! As I said, he was going through a period of being a total arse.

mybaby - was ds1 2.5 when he started using a spoon at all or could he use it before this but just not very well?

God knows.

I cannot remember that far back. In the grand scheme of things, I don't think it really makes any difference what age they where when they started.
