Breakfast ideas please, gluten free and dairy free for four mnth old (please read OP before you hang me for early weaning)

DS4 is being weaned at 18 weeks on advice of his Paediatrician

It is not a decision I would have made otherwise, having planned to follow BLW< but I feel I need to follow the advice given.

Now, having cleared that - any ideas please? have sopme millet porridge being prepared as a trial, but it takes half an hour, which s a no go when the boys are back to school!

With the others I used a packet cereal, but all the GF ones I can find now are not DF.

why has he been advised to be weaned (or why have you been advised more to the point??)

if it is weight issues, then I can recommend what I used to do for my DD3 as she had to be weaned similarly.

I started off with baby rice and my milk....not for many days tho, she hated it!

I then got a mouli (sp?) blender and made apple puree, mashed in banana and also mashed avocado. it was fab for high fat healthy, dairy-free/gluten-free yummy food for her, and she LOVED it.

only problem was, it didn;t keep, so I had to make it fresh each day. I had left-overs spread on my toast after.

What about Sago or Tapioca as a base for fruits?

millet porridge does not take half an hour! we make it each morning and it tkaes less than 5 mins to make perhaps the same to cooldown. we used with rice milk from 6-12 months for our two dds. you can use rice flakes too or quinoa porridge as a variation

I think the Organix cereals are gluten free

I thought all foods labelled as suitable for 4-6mo were gluten free anyway?

Plumbaby do a four grain porridge which is gluten and lactose free

you have to read all the labels very carefully as you will find gluten, dairy, meat, etc even in the foods labelled from 4-6 months. Boots normally do a good range of cereals that dont have added milk/gluten

plumbaby isn't stocked in my supermarket unfortunately

it is growth issues, his brothers issues resolved when they were weaned (4 months the norm then) and they want to know if ds4 is the same or if they need to look further, in his case I do support them. Its also important I do not fall out with the family Paed!

gf seems easy to find yes, it's the df i am struggling with, i normally give df ds's porridge but that isn't gf you see

didn't hink of boots ta, asda is the easiest to get to on the bus but small choice

quinoa- did wonder if that was ok

Really feel for you - having a game finding DF alternatives for my DD, luckily can get Plum baby porridges at Tesco locally, with that baby rice and Annabel Karmel's ideas we're getting on OK

Why is it important not to fall out with a paediatrician? Seriously - it s possible that this is really bad advice. Second opinion a possibility?

Becaise she is also Paed for 2 of mt other boys, ahs a say in all their care and has fought for us lots along the way. I do actually trust her and she's the only professiona I have met that I can say that for

Does your DS have a dairy free formula and/or can you express breast milk?

If so, the First breakfast cereals are rice and dried banana/raspberry and made up in seconds. You can make them up with water (which I have done) but milk is nicer, and better for a child with slow weight gain.

Second the avocado suggestion - really stacked the weight on with DS.

will try avocado- did that with ds3 iirc; also quinoa. Is the tapioca gf then? wasn't sure!

have mixed the millet with fruit and df formula (BF but struggling with expressing, its just for food though- has yto be, he won't take a bottle)

When DD was under-age for gluten I gave her for breakfast:
half a pot of pure fruit puree (eg. Organix or Boots Organics) mixed with a heaped teaspoon (or more) of millet from box, and I might have added water but can't remember now. Took no time at all. I think the box of millet told us how to do it.

Waitrose stocks PlumBaby but my DD didn't like their 4 grain porridge.

How about bananas? You can mash it down, stir in some baby rice? and whatever non-diary formula you give. Baby rice takes a few minutes to thicken up but you don't have to heat it.

there's no waitrose or ocado (sounds like i live in the back of beyond- within 30 minutes of cardiff and newport LOL, just car is an issue (might lose my licence Friday- and no, I didnt break the law before anyone asks LOL

So the bus goes to Cwmbran which has tasda, boots, holland and barratt, there's a sainsburys too- might check that out for stuff, dont go there often

plum baby is available in boots. that's where I got the cereal for DD as she was GF till 9mo.

Coeliac UKs gluten free food and drink directory has a section for babyfoods as well as GF foods you can get in supermarkets and eating out. It will make your life a bit easier if you are going to be doing this till he's 3 . you don't need to be member to buy from the shop, but if he is on a GF diet, you should be able to join.

you can get GF cereals (grown up ones) in most supermarkets. I like Nature's Path Mesa sunrise flakes, which DD (14mo) eats quite happily. You can also use rice crispies; sainsbury's own brand are OK for coeliacs.

Incidentally, why are they suggesting early weaning? I know you have posted about your DS before but can't remember the details.

dd2 was GF unti lshe was one i think i used these when out and about

I used to give ds2 and ds3 something like a banana for a gf breakfast until they were old enough to suck on gf toast. Or a rice ouddingy type thing (but mine could have casein).
