defrosting potato - what am I doing wrong?!

Just beginning to wean, and having much fun making multi-coloured ice cubes. Trouble is, when I defrost potato it doesn't go back to being potato puree, but lumps of potato in water. My DD is soldiering on and eating it, but it looks pretty grim and the texture's all wrong. I've been blending potato and a small amount of water, and freezing from room temperate, and then defrosting again at room temperature. Am I missing something?

sorry don't know the answer but have had problems myself in defrosting mash in that my dd will eat mash fresh but not defrosted...I add a bit of milk and wonder now if that doesn't freeze properly?!

Potato never freezes very well; it's best made fresh every time. It's probably the high water content or something.

dont blend it, just mash it or put it through a potato ricer - it breaks down and goes very starchy if you puree it. I add in milk and a bit of butter when mashing and then it freezes and defrosts fine.

If you use a ricer like this www.lakeland.co.uk/potato-ricer/F/keyword/ricer/product/11390 the potato goes nice and fluffy and defrosts well. when you defrost it add some milk/water and it turns into lovely fluffy mash again .
I haven't tried using it for any other fruit/veg for ds but am going to give it a go as it was incredibly easy (so muc less hassle than the blender!)

sorry, x posts with seona. It makes perfect mash for grown ups too

no blending potato at all (in fact i'm a no blending type full stop) but i do mash in the micro. bake potato in micro then run tatty thro' the ricer. that's pretty much instant mash, imo.

Overmydeadbody · 06/08/2008 20:19

Don't blend it, as Seona said. That releases the gluten and makes it a stodgy mess.

What I would do is mix it with other things before freezing, like some haddock and peas.

Pheebe · 06/08/2008 20:28

Sweet potatoe blends and defrosts well. Best when mixed with other veg though as it too can be a bit stodgy.

ooooh, just give the baby a bit of potato and let him get on with it.
