BLW - this wasn't around in 2005! Have I missed a C4 programme?

Have a DS2 now at 21 weeks old. I'm not sure what's been going on since I had DS1 but all I seem to see on here is BLW. Has there been an eye-opening parenting programme that's changed everything? I was going to proceed with the purees, which went brilliantly first time round. DS1 eats anything and everything. What's so great about BLW?

You've not missed a programme, but you have missed a blog

BLW has been around for a while....I had DS in 2004 & it was around then...just not so obviously....it stemmed from a study that was done by Gill Rapley in 2003.....although lots of people started solids blw-style before this....it just didn't have a name

Hmmmm, in the last week I've seen two mums hooking food out of choking babies' mouths so I think I'll stick to what I know. DS1 is hugely adventurous/greedy with food, so it went OK that time.

even when you've seen this?

I bet they weren't actually choking...

DS2 used to choke on purees

Habbibu · 31/07/2008 14:45

I suspect if they were choking, you'd not be able to hook the food out - were probably gagging. That said, you do have to be comfortable with the gagging, and the mess, to do BLW, so it doesn't suit everyone.

Yep - used BLW in 2003 - fairly new concept then. It was great and I now recommend it to anyone who will listen to me bang on about it. Am a part time HV so people do listen to me amazingly enough. Sometimes I get odd looks from parents who have been advised by their Mum to give baby rice at 13 weeks though.

blw is not a new concept, it's just that it's fairly trendy now and The Thing to do. nothing wrong with purees, it's just a different way to feed your baby

but puree fed babies gag, and IME puree even harder to clean up than blw mess - blw mess tends to be crumbs, and half chewed solid things, whereas puree is just slop
