straining and grunting, but normal poos

i've been giving DD solids for a few weeks now (she is 30 weeks) and she's taken to it really well and loves to try new things

but on some days (like today) she strains and grunts like she is constipated, only to eventually produce a completely normal poo

i thought it might be belly ache, but she doesn't really seem in pain

is this normal? is she just getting used to digesting? or could it be something is disagreeing with her?

I have tried to introduce new things slowly and this happens even when she's had nothing different

Is she pooing less often than before? My dd2 usually does less poos since weaning but they're quite hefty ones, so she really gives it some grunt! If she doesn't seem uncomfortable I wouldn't worry about it too much.

thanks jellybelly

she is pooing more than before - about 3 times a day whereas before it was one big one a day on milk only

she strains and grunts way before the poo actually comes out, though - hence i'm wondering if it's just getting used to having solids moving round in her belly. or if it means it's disagreeing with her

she is mainly BLW, so a lot of the food is chunks but she has a problem with lactose - so i am always on the look out in case anything causes her problems.

i thought weaning would help her, but seems to have brought a whole load of other reactions - i'm finding it hard to tell what's what. residual lactose problems? teething? chunky food? it's like being a detective...

yeah i know, there are a lot of things that come out whole too which often causes dd to grunt a fair bit, raisins in particular!

teething if anything makes poos loose and nasty and causes big bum rashes so i doubt that would make her grunt and strain.

Also, it could simply be a lot of gas before the poo - that would definitely be an effect of a lot of new foods.

the lactose thing must be a pain, its in a lot of stuff isn't it.

yeah - it's in lots of things - including teething powders, unfortunately

we make up her milk using boiling water, to reduce the lactose in it and we had colief for months

i was pleased to find there's almost none in philadelphia cheese, though, and she loves that

thanks for your help

no problem, teething gels might not have lactose in them although i find them to be a bit pointless as my babies both just seemed to enjoy eating the gel
