When it's Hipp Porridge made of WHEAT not OATS!

Bum. I just gave my 6-month old DD Hipp baby porridge thinking it would be PORRIDGE but have just realised it is mainly made from wheat. I should have checked the packet I know, but you don't expect to buy a packet of beef and to open it and find that it's pork, do you?

Anyway, what effect will it have on my baby to have eaten wheat? I know she's not supposed to at 6 months.

I think wheat is ok once they are six months. Not recommended before.

You'd probably be better off buying ordinary porridge oats - cheaper, nicer, and guaranteed to be oats. You're right, though - one assumes that porridge is just oats, not wheat.

Thanks for replies.

mumofmoo - my HV leaflet says 7 months for wheat. I don't know what it would do before that. Perhaps it's just a case of which things are statistically more likely to give an allergy?

Interesting, just checked my Birth to Five and Weaning Leaflet and both just say not to introduce wheat before 6 months.

As with many things they probably change the recommendations every other week.

Agree that porridge should be porridge though!

I gave DS anything (with usual exceptions of honey, nut, shellfish, fruit shoots ...) at 6 months. Don't think he had porridge but he loved bread and toast.

Caz10 · 27/06/2008 20:59

I think wheat is ok after 6mths

i HOPE wheat is ok after 6mths...

(dd loving mostly toast, breadsticks, etc...)

The NHS weaning leaflet says its ok!

susiemj · 27/06/2008 21:19

Damn! No Fruit shoots?

Thanks for your replies. It really gets on my nerves that advice is so inconsistent. I'm in Wales and the NHS seems to be giving different advice than in England.

She loved the porridge though.....so...off we go!
