Weaning depression

I think I’m going through weaning depression after a sudden big drop in feeds since DS started falling asleep independently and also stopped cosleeping (both suddenly and simultaneously at 21 months old). We’ve gone down to just one feed a day now and it’s been about 2 weeks.

I’m feeling a flatness like I can’t feel energised or excited about anything. I’m also feeling a massive disconnect from my DH and my mind has been wandering. I feel anxious, sad, often in tears and have had lots of headaches. And I’m also experiencing a lot of mood swings.

Does this sound like weaning depression? Should I do anything about it or does it usually pass quickly?

Sorry to be clear, are you breastfeeding? If so then yes a reduction in feeds can cause a hormonal drop and wreck havoc with your moods x

Yes it can be brutal but will ease soon 💐 I remember it being 4-6 weeks to feel myself again.

(Unless you're keen on weaning now start offering more often & the extra feeds will make you feel better quickly! Otherwise sex can be very helpful...obviously requires a better connection with your DH first though.)

How old are you @trufflesandolives? Is there any chance that you’ve gone from regular BFing straight into the Peri?

trufflesandolives · 21/03/2026 09:05

@PickledElectricityyes still breastfeeding but down to once a day now with no night feeds. Three weeks ago I was breastfeeding on demand through the night.

It should pass in a few weeks. I stupidly went cold turkey the first time I stopped feeding and I have never felt so depressed in my life. It lasted for about 3 weeks but that was 3 weeks of no feeding at all so might be a little longer if you’re still phasing out the feeds. Hang in there though it’s definitely temporary.
