"ready somewhere near the middle of the first year"

Can this be interpreted to mean that there will be some babies who are a genuine early weaning case?

When does "towards the middle of first year" start then - about 23/24 weeks onwards - presumably there will be a few before, most in the middle, most just after.

SO........what do you do if at 23/24 weeks when you think they might be ready - do you hold on tight until precisely 26 weeks or do you take their signs (grabbing for food, sitting up, dextrous enough to move food to mouth, lost tongue thrust etc) to mean they are one of the earlier ones.

Could you make safe foods available to them and if they pick them up and eat them presume that they are ready - how would you approach that if you were intending to use puree too?

Just a few thoughts mulling around my head at the moment!

Hey Pecka. I remember you from the due in dec thread but dropped out myself when my lo came in Oct. how are you getting on?
I can't tell you exact answers for this as everyone seems to have their own opinion but I started weaning about 23/24 wks when he started showing his own signs for being interested in food. I started with simple fruit/veg purees on the end of my finger and he adored it so moved onto the weaning spoon. I just played it safe and avoided ingredients like gluten and the like until after 26 wks.

Hiya

I remember you - hows your little one?

We are doing great, Mathilda is only 22 weeks so still a few weeks off but she is getting so interested in food and making swipes for things etc its got me wondering about the 26 week thing.

Im still intending to hold out for 26 weeks - she is fine on milk for now, sleeps really well etc but I find it interesting as DD is my third and with my first two the guidelines were different.

Alex is really good thanks. Spent a month in SCBU after he was born because of his weight but has caught up now. Nearly 32 wks old! The time just flies in doesn't it? Mathilda's a lovely name - quite unusual. I'm glad everything worked out because I remember you having a bit of a scarey time at the start of your preg.
I think you'll find many a discussion on here about the change in guidelines from 4 to 6 months but the general concensus seems to be to wait until 6. I personally find it a real hassel weaning and would have waited til a year if I could!! One of the reasons I started a couple of weeks earlier was he started waking through the night again.
