11 month old with cows milk

Hi guys.
I have an 11 month old dd who is OBSESSED with boobie. She will not go to bed or sleep more than 2 hours without it through the night (aswell as sucking me dry up to 8 times a day when I’m not working). We have tried all kinds of techniques to try wean her off it.

she will not take formula and I can not express anything more than 10ml before bleeding.

she will not take any water/any fluids apart from boobie. This scares me so much because she is in nursery 3 days a week 8.5hours a day whilst I work.

I tried her today with full fat cows milk and she guzzled 6oz from a bottle!!!!! Which seems like nothing to some but it’s a MAJOR achievement for us.

I know cows milk isn’t recommended until 12 months but I can not get her to drink anything until this today.

do you think it’s ok to carry on with cows milk to try wean her off?

she’s just had 1oz of cows milk again before bed and fell asleep in seconds (without me).

help a mama out please. Will it harm her?

As long as her main drink is breastmilk it's fine. Think of it as a food item instead that youre giving alongside the breastmilk

Yes, her main drink is breastmilk 100% and will be until she’s at least 18 months hopefully. Thank you for responding and putting my mind at ease x

My little one started having toddler soya at 11 months as his soya formula ran out. I'd imagine it's nice to know now that she'll drink something when she's at nursery now if she won't drink water

@SHTTC2024when my eldest turned 11 months only 3 years ago I transitioned to cows milk in the day and topped breastfeeding as she was due to go to nursery, I didn't want to pump, and I really couldn't see the benefit of pumping for just one month given she was a good eater ❤️

If she eats well and gets good nutrition overall embrace the cow's milk if that's what works best! She's 11 months, not 1 month xx

Thank you so much! This makes me feel so much better. Did your baby have any side effects from having the cows milk or was everything ok?
im just worried her little tummy won’t cope very well. But everything seems ok up to now x

@SHTTC2024no, not at all. She'd already been having dairy through cheese/ porridge etc so her tummy was fine 😊

OtterMummy2024 · 28/09/2025 21:21

Canadian guidelines say whole milk is fine from 9 months and WHO now say it's fine instead of formula at 6 months, so I think you can safely make that transition.

dementedpixie · 28/09/2025 21:52

@OtterMummy2024 UK guidelines are that formula should be given until 12 months at which point whole or semi skimmed milk can be given. Cows milk can be used in cooking and cereals from 6 months but formula/breastmilk should be the main drink until 1 year
