Hi all,

looking for some advice and/or reassurance!

my 8 month old is still struggling with eating anything other than purées.
when given anything with lumps or bits in he gags and throws up. He will put every toy in his mouth but when it comes to food he won’t even put a finger of banana in his mouth.

im really struggling and looking for any help

thanks

Have you tried those chewy pouches that you can put things in for him to suck/chew through the holes? (They look like a dummy)

Do you let him play with food and explore different textures with his hands?

Have you tried just very small lumps in his food and gradually increased this?

Quite normal for babies to gag at times but is it every time and is he sick every time?

X

Yes he has one of them dummy feeders, and will have some fruit in that.

i have tried small lumps and sometimes he will start off ok, then usually will throw it back up.

as we speak, he has just had some thicker porridge with banana in and has thrown up.

he has started to want to feed himself but again if it’s not purée he will throw up.

im hoping as he gets older he will start to improve.

I’d ask the health visitor if yours is decent, if not then the GP, to have a look inside his mouth to check there’s nothing going on medically that might be stopping him from swallowing properly e.g. enlarged tonsils. Then presuming all ok there just offer the purees he will eat alongside some finger foods to play and explore with. He will get there.

My DC1 would only have smooth puree until 12 months.

Think it was a combination of enlarged tonsils and undiagnosed Tongue tie.

I am waiting for a call back from a health visitor to hopefully help me, thank you all

Have a look at the article I linked to about Tongue Tie before she calls back if you can. Undiagnosed TT definitely added to our woes.

My DD had real difficulty with weaning, and threw up whenever I got anything into her mouth (including purees or yoghurt) until she reached her first birthday. While weaning continued to be a struggle, it seems that the vomit was a passing stage. And she really couldn't handle anything beyond milk for much longer than your DS. So he may well grow out of it.
