Weaning woes

So, aware the food before 1 is just for fun and we have zero expectation that baby is going to be stuffing her face with food and dropping milk feeds.

But, she’s just over 6 months and we started weaning a few days ago. But she has zero interest….outside the high chair, she shoves EVERYTHING into her mouth, and I mean everything. But in the high chair? Nothing. Nada. We’re trying mashes and soft sticks of veg at the moment and she mushes her hands in it a little but nothing makes it to her mouth. We pre-load a spoon and she MIGHT grab it but again, doesn’t make it to her mouth!

Are we doing something wrong or do we just keep trying this every day and eventually she’ll start to understand?

I feel like all the other babies in my NCT group just took to it instantly based on what I’ve heard!

She's still tiny OP, keep trying keep it light and fun and it will all click. I don't agree with food before 1 is just for fun because they do need to start getting some external iron sources etc but honestly at 6 months what you are describing is perfectly normal.

Dont worry about your nct friends, some will be embellishing the truth as they want their little to sound amazing, or what you will find is maybe their babies do love food but your baby walks before theirs etc - it isn't a competition they all do things in the own time just trying to enjoy it

Lots of amazing resources available to support you if concerned - SR Nutrition on instagram is a good place to start and you can always talk to your HV

You’ve only been doing it a few days, some babies take months to get going so definitely don’t worry at this point.

Sit together at meal times and just let her watch you eat and explore her own food, eventually she will start trying it herself.

Thanks both that’s reassured me a lot! 🙏🏻

I honestly don’t think my second understood that food could be a way to ease her hunger till she was closer to 12 months.

At this age I’d pop a couple of things on her high chair tray and blithely ignore what she’s up to and enjoy your meal Smile

Food isn’t just for fun before one, it’s a source of nutrients, especially iron and important for developement of facial muscles. But, you’ve just started!

You can always try sitting them on your knee as you’re getting and let them have some of the food on your plate.
