Can you combine BLW with mashed food?

Hey
i would like to know if its possible to combine both as i find it hard to do BLW only. Can someone advise if they have done it and it was okay? Or does it cause confusion to little one.
my baby is 7 months old mainly has mashed food.
Thanks

Combining both is traditional weaning - mashed food and finger foods. It's absolutely ok.

You can do whatever you like!

My baby started with puree and some soft finger foods, he preferred the puree until around 9/10 months and then decided he wanted to feed himself. So from around 9 months we did mostly finger food with some mash that he feeds himself with his hands.

He's now nearly 15 months and eats everything we eat. He’s a great little eater.

Some people are so funny about BLW that they think it has to be done a certain way, its become a bit cult like now.

It's certainly what I did.

Seeline · 03/04/2025 12:36

It's what we used to call 'weaning'.

Yes it's absolutely fine.

KittenPause · 03/04/2025 12:36

there are no rules just recommendations

feed them what you have

KittenPause · 03/04/2025 12:37

It’s only food

there will be no confusion

SoftPillow · 03/04/2025 12:50

Absolutely fine.

I suspect many people combine approaches, everyone I know did.

MammaTo · 03/04/2025 12:57

Yes it’s absolutely fine. The BLW brigade are just as patronising as that car seat safety Facebook group. Try not to over think it and don’t let social media scare you into thinking it needs to be done a certain way.
I used to tie myself in knots about LO trying every vegetable under the sun and making elaborate meals for them, was ridiculous.

Thank you. You’re absolutely right. Its nerve wrecking although i do believe in importance of chewing food for better jaw development but will get there surely eventually
