I can’t find a water cup / bottle that my six month old will use ➡️ constipation ➡️ help!

I started weaning my 6mo a couple of weeks ago and his poo has become very dry and paste-like and this evening was actually a small flushable blob. It clearly is causing him a lot of pain and discomfort.

We have tried the prune purees but ultimately I think the problem lies in the fact I’m getting very little water in him. I feel like we’ve tried every type of cup but he just doesn’t understand how to get the water out. It doesn’t help that his teeth are coming through so he’s using the plastic side of the cups to gnaw his teeth onto.

Can anyone recommend anything please? Thank you.

Obviously I don’t mean to type ‘bottle’ in the title. It’s a cup I need. I only got four hours’ sleep last night!

Do you have any shot glasses? Fill one of those with water and hold it up to his mouth and hopefully he will take a bit. Have you tried a free flow sippy cup with you tipping it up for him?

The Tommee Tippee free flow ones with the hard fixed spout are good easy ones to start with.

We used the tommee tippee first cup. Was cheap and free flowing. Can also be used with the lid off

Doidy cup?

Off to Amazon for Tommee Tippee ones and will try to hunt for a shot glass at the back of the cupboard somewhere! Thanks so much 😊

Pick one cup and offer the same one repeatedly. It just takes time for him to learn. Also drink from it yourself and exaggerate how great it is.

Not a cup recommendation but just wondered if you’re BFing or FFing abd have you dropped any feeds?

And how many times a day are you offering solids?

Hipefully we can suggest a few tweaks tgat will help him out Smile

My little one only drinks out of a straw cup I got silicone ones with little straws

my daughter we could never get her to use cups for a long time so she never had water until around a year old 😝 it was fine though she just got hydrated from breast feeds

but had similar with the hard poo for a while until the weaning was a bit more established

it will get better!

Thanks all!

I am breastfeeding, on demand day and night. I was offering solids once a day - some kind of mushed up vegetable. But he wasn’t having any water with it because I couldn’t get him to drink from any of the cups.

On Saturday and Sunday we tried some prune puree and got some small solid poos from that, they were like play dough. No other solids. And he was screaming when farting and passing them ☹️

Yesterday we gave half a packet of prune puree and tried the Tommee cup mentioned above - which he managed to use with not too much water dribbling down his front. 😅

It worked! We got a poonami last night and again this morning.

Now I feel we can start up with the veggies again and hopefully he can drink water with them from the TT cup!

Help! Unfortunately, we’re still struggling. After our success in the previous post, DS has only had one ice cube’s worth of broccoli, a few days ago, but still no poo. But the thing is, he simply won’t use the TT cup again. It’s like he’s forgotten how to get the water out. He’s teething, so he’s just using the spout as a teething tool.

He won’t use a straw, he won’t even use the bottle I give him when I express water. I just don’t know how to get water in him, and without that, I don’t know how we can continue to give solid foods, if just a small amount of green veg causes no poos for five days. Is there anything we can do or buy - anything at all?!

I’ve even tried taking the lid off the TT cup and using it like an open cup but the water just runs down his top. It’s as though unless it’s a boob he has no idea how to sip or suck. I am getting desperate now!

In my experience, weaning does mess up their digestion and poo as their system gets used to it. We found that daily prune puree helped.

Do they like yoghurt? We found that some yoghurt or fruit puree on a straw helped to encourage our DC to drink. But when still breastfeeding, getting in enough water is a bit less of a worry when initially weaning - I just offered breastmilk more often.

the other thing that worked was the tum tum straw cups which are free flow. And practicing open cup drinking in the bath which helped it be fun and a novelty without me worrying about cleaning up the mess!

Ok my 6 month old has also been suffering with constipation badly the last few days and we tried everything.

the lady that runs our baby massage class said to try a cotton wool bud with a bit of coconut oil or Vaseline and gently rub around the opening.

I tried this tonight as a last resort and lo and behold the poop started coming and coming. She said it forces the muscle around the anus to relax.

obviously it might not fix the issue of constipation long term but to get a good night sleep it has worked a treat for us tonight!
