Weaning advice?

LO is 6 months and have just started weaning this week. Started by introducing 1 x vegetable a day, but gave him some weetabix this morning and he loved it. When should he be on 3 meals a day? At what point, if not already do I start offering him food instead of milk? The HV says ‘I’ll know’ but I don’t know 🤣 and just scared of overfeeding him! Doing a combination of spoon-feeding and BLW in these early stages until we find what works best for us! TIA for any advice.

My daughter is nearly 11 months old now and I’d say you will know because he will show you. He’ll start choosing food over milk, refusing a certain milk feed so you then know it’s time to drop it, but remember you have a long way to go before food is priority. Food before 1 is really “just for fun” in as much as they still need their milk/formula until 1.

The 3 meals a day thing all depends on your baby, but typically they start at about 8/9 months however that is still WITH all/most of their milk feeds.

6 months old is still right at the very start of a weaning journey, just take it easy, try to have fun with it & watch your baby. You don’t “know” yet because you’ve literally only just started, give it time :)

Go on Amazon and buy how to wean your baby by Charlotte sterling reed. You can find her on Instagram as well.

You need to do the finger test and smile.

Let the baby taste everything on your finger or nipple and smile at the reaction.

Start with fruits and vegetables, then gravies, then fishy, then spicy

Choose cold sauces as the ingredients have been cooked and broken down.

Good luck from a mum whose children embarrass me by eating absolutely everything because of the old lady at church told me to do this.

One meal a day is absolutely fine at 6 months. You don’t need to offer solids 3 times a day until they’re between 8 and 9 months. They changed to guidelines to this as some people were dropping milk feeds too quickly.

Have you seen this guide from the Caroline Walker Trust? It has some great suggestions of first foods to try Smile

I started weaning this week too. My health visitor said by 7 months they should be on 3 meals a day, even though they may still be eating very little of those meals. Gradually increase amount of food offered. Offer same amount of milk feeds until baby decides to drop the feeds themselves. I took this approach with my eldest 5 years ago and it worked really well.

I attended a weaning workshop ran by HV’s this week and they said by 10 months they will likely only be having 2 or 3 bottles per day.

Of course all babies are different though so I’d just follow their lead for the most part.

Avocado is the work horse of weaning.
Fatty (to make baby sleep)
No one is allergic
Healthy
Add a little to the mile, so the taste is not odd.
