no, you can just mash it.

belgo · 12/05/2008 16:57

If you want to freeze it though you'll have to cook it well first.

hey belgo! thanks - he's got first taste of cauliflower puree first - then a dessert of the pear. Wonder which one he'll prefer

Why do you have to cook if you're freezing? I always do cook it when freezing, but I didn't realise you had to. Is it a food safety thing, or something else?

belgo · 13/05/2008 12:48

It will go black if you freeze uncooked pear (I think!)

Tinkjon · 13/05/2008 13:22

Is that true of any fruit, do you know, belgo? (thought) of course I could just try it and find out for myself but I'm being lazy

callaird · 13/05/2008 20:22

I freeze most fruits uncooked (mango, melon, plums, nectarines etc) but cook apple and pear as they discolour (although the boys don't care what colour it is!) also if I add banana to apple or pear, I do it while it is still hot from steaming or it all goes brown. Usually just mash a banana for them though!

How do you cook them callaird? I was just about to mash some pears to freeze, glad smiling raised this post!!

callaird · 15/05/2008 19:43

I steam them over boiling water. If they are ripe then they will only take 5 mins or so. When mashing, place the pan in bowl of cold water to cool them down quickly then freeze in ice cube trays. Will last 3 months, or not depending on how hungry your little one is, ours lasts about 10 mins, I am sure someone else is eating it all!!!

Thanks callaird
