Advice on weaning after excl. BF for 6 months - timings on solids/milk feeds?

Hiya

I'm a childminder trying to help out a newish mum with weaning. Baby will be getting weaned in about a month and mum would like some advice on the best way to start this off.

I would really like to help this mum out but as it's 5 years ago that I went through this with ds, and all baby mindees I've helped wean were bottle fed, I'm struggling a little with timings etc.

I've told mum that I THINK it's best to do solid feed before offering milk so they can try that first, that the solids are not going to actually fill her up for a while as she needs to get used to dealing with solids in her mouth first etc. I also think it's best to start with 1 meal a day and work up to eventually having 3 but I may be wrong? (it was all different guidelines when I weaned ds as I did it at 4 months as that's what I always believed was correct and I hadn't heard new guidelines).

I'm not actually going to be looking after baby whilst the weaning takes place as I'll be going on maternity leave myself just before this starts. So any advice you lovely mumsnetters can give would be MUCH appreciated.

TIA

I just offered food at my meal times and DS took it from there - he was demand fed with milk with no real pattern, so it made sense to just keep with 'real' meal times. I did BLW too, so he only ate as much as he felt like, and I didn't stress about what he ate or how much.
His nursery were quite happy with this approach too - obviously if he slept through a meal time, he was offered that meal afterwards.
