Food/ recipes for 7 mo w/ sensitive gag reflex

Hi all,

I am hoping MN can help. My 7 mo shows little interest in food (total opposite to DS 1 who ate everything and anything given to him with ease) and struggles to put food to the back of his mouth and swallow.

I think he has a sensitive gag reflex. I’ve tried sticking to purées/ mash, fingers foods, spoon feeding, baby led weaning etc and he’s just not fussed/ struggles to swallow and has chocked a few times on things like bananas and wafers.

The HV said to move to finger foods as much as possible but naturally I’m anxious about chocking and I’m not sure what to give him.

Any recipes/ food ideas would be much appreciated.

I can image he you are anxious. Did they actually choke or was it gagging? There's an article here which explains the difference and what to do if they do choke.

I think that if you're nervous it might be worthwhile to do a Paediatric First Aid Course. If you can't find one is at least watch this video on how to help a baby who is choking.

As for finger foods, there are some good suggestions in this guide from the Caroline Walker Trust.

You can also give some of what you're eating. So say if you're doing a roast dinner today you could give them a Yorkshire Pudding and maybe some green beans?
