Going veeerrryyyy slowly!

I have been weaning ds for about 5 weeks (he is almost 7 mo now) and it seems to be going very slowly - not sure if I should be speeding things up a bit. He did eat most of what I gave him, but now seems to refuse more than he eats. Could he be bored? Or do I just stick to what he likes (butternut squash mainly!).
All very confusing - HV seems to think he should be on meat by now!

DS2 is 11 months and struggles to chew even tiny shredded up pieces of meat.

I found offering them as finger food was a good way to get dd to try new things (including steak...)

Make extra of what you are eating, cut it into small pieces on your plate and let ds have a taste of whatever he likes

He seems to only want very very smooth stuff, yoghurt, squash, avocado. Is that normal for early weaning?

Are you mostly offering puree type stuff?
What happens if you put some chicken in his butternut squash? Is that what HV meant?
Lots of people are encouraging a move away from purees and moving more towards 'baby led weaning'. So lots of finger foods.
I use a combination of both as I like to know something has got into their tummies so they don't get hungry at night.
Aitch is a bit of an expert on it though and might be able to give you some better advice.

7 months for meat?

Not necessary imo.

Just take it at DC's pace as long as he is poutting on weight he is fine.

ruddynorah · 29/04/2008 13:23

meat is fine at 7 months. dd had her first meat at 7 months, she had christmas dinner so a piece of turkey and a piece of beef.

Mine are past weaning and it seemed young if one only started weaning at 6 months to be having meat one month later.

My DD started out (at 6 months) opening her mouth for anything and then had a couple of weeks (around 7 months) when she seemed to get much pickier and only fancied very smooth purees (and finger food).

She kept at it just long enough for me to get worried, then 2 teeth popped up and since then she's been fine with lumps, meat, home cooked stuff etc.
