Finger food ideas

My DS loves feeding himself and I pretty much hate purees so I am thinking I might give them up and just let him do his own thing. So far I he has had broccoli, cauliflower, cheese, pitta bread, banana and melon.

What other finger foods can I give him?

6mo?

dd usually gets whatever we're eating with the sauce wiped off

toast, bread and butter, chicken, steak, whatever's in the fruit bowl / breadbin / fridge. If it's crunchy eg apple I microwave it in water for a minute. Oh and fishfingers.

rice cakes
carrot sticks
asparagus
eggy bread
pasta twists
bread sticks

Obviously depends how old you LO is and how well they cope with chewing but DD has:

breadsticks
crackerbreads
toast
little sandwhiches
kallo marmite flavour ricecakes
biscotti
grapes - cut in half
roast parsnips
I sometimes make banana cake and she loves that!
Slices of avocado
I got a recipe from this site I think for cheesy lentil wedges - they were good

Hey Edie -- haven't "talked" to you in a long time - d4phne alias Glimmer here! DS is 5 months old I am reading up on the weaning side!
What is a pasta twist and is the vegetable slightly steamed or raw?

EdieMcredie · 24/04/2008 17:46

Hey Glimmer!! How are you? Who would have thought all that time ago that we would one day be swapping weaning tips?? How is it going??

Pasta twists are the kind you get that are, well, twisty!! Fusilli is its proper name. And the veg is steamed yes.

fishfingers are the bees knees according to my dd. I also make short little fish-finger shaped 'patties' of minced lamb, mashed potato and egg. Same thing with egg, cooked rice, cooked spinach and grated cheese (kind of like an omlette but the cooked rice means it is slightly more solid and easy to hold on to). I fry all these things as we are trying to get dd to put on weight!

Edie, asparagus - what a great idea! Can't believe I hadn't thought of that. We're only about a week into BLW but DS's favourites are orange segments and breadsticks smeared with Philadelphia. I got that idea from the Aitch's blog - the lady who posted them (not sure if it was you, Aitch?) calls them Philadelphia lollies You smear the top half in Philadelphia and leave the bottom half plain for them to hold. Although DS invariably grabs the wrong end and then has Philly hands which he smears all over his hair.
