BLWers, what's the easiest pasta shape for LOs to pick up?

My DD is 7.5 months old, I haven't tried giving her pasta yet, what shape is good to start with?

I was thinking of just grating a little cheese on top. Any other ideas? Is she too young for tomato sauce (homemade, no salt, obviously)?

Thanks

Barilla do mini-penne (and some other mini shapes) which are perfect.

Otherwise orecchiette are great.

Fusilli seems to be a good choice, easy to grip and not to slippery once in the mouth! I have a ridiculous fear that penne would just slip straight into choking position... I think tomato would be ok, not sure if you'd have to sieve out the seeds. You could make a sweet potato puree to go with it instead?

Mine prefer the twirls (?fusilli), tubes (penne) and shells but managed most types of pasta from a young age, even spaghetti and tagliatelle!

I gave mine tomato sauce (either plain tinned chopped tomatoes or small amount of passata) with herbs and cheese which went down well. I also mixed the pasta with broccoli and cheese sauce.

Penne or rigatone.

I used to give my DS twirls and he coped quite well picking them up. I also used to buy the small pasta you use in soups, like minestrone to make him a tomato based pasta dish.

Wheels (Rotelle?) - my DD loved them. I have only ever seen them in Waitrose, though, and Waitrose appear to be in a prolonged dispute with their pasta supplier ATM

Dd loved tubes before she could use a knife and fork - she put them on her fingers like gloves and then ate them off one by one.

ImightbeLulumama · 22/04/2008 12:15

fusilli or wheels were favourites here

aldi usually has a good assortment of interesting pasta shapes, and they are cheap too

also, DD liked bolognese, if it was chunky enough to pick up in her hands,

Definitely fusili - asda quick cook ones arent too big unlike some of them - ds is 12 months and loves them - had them for the past couple months with a spoon of chopped tomatoes heated thru but also like them just with a knob of melted unsalted butter and a little grated cheese.

DD loves spaghetti - but it's exceptionally messy - however it does get the bolognaise sauce in without her noticing.
