Stupid but scared to give finger foods...help!

DS2 is coming up to 6 months so we're starting to wean him (going great) but I'm really worried about giving him finger foods. With DS1 I waited way too long and found it all incredibly stressful, he coped brilliantly, can't even actually remember him ever choking!)

The thought of giving him sliced banana or toast or cooked carrot sticks is bringing out in cold sweats.

I'm just being stupid aren't I...?

Me too (was panicking). But it was brilliant! He has done a tiny bit of choking twice in 2 months and has eaten:

butternut squash
all kinds of other veg
steamed apple
ripe raw pear
toast with unsalted butter
Cheerios (I feed him these as he hasn't quite got a pincer grip)
babybel cheese, mozzarella and cheddar
asparagus tips
Organix baby crisps (great for out and about)
avocado...

Oh my god, so many things!

We still do jars also but it made the transition to the lumpy stuff so much easier than with DS1 and 2.

It will probably surprise you as it did me.

thanks monkeybird, and thanks for the ideas, i know i have to just take the plunge and let him have a go

I started DS2 with toast (I can't remember with DS1). He also had organix carrot sticks and adult breadsticks. He's 10 months now and can eat practically any finger food other than really hard raw veg.

Stefka · 16/04/2008 18:19

What age can you start with finger foods? Is it six months?

gegs73 · 16/04/2008 18:26

I started mine about 6 months though he didn't really eat it, just sucked it. I also gave him puree at the same time.

Stefka · 16/04/2008 18:41

What did you start with?

MrsTittleMouse · 16/04/2008 18:44

I gave DD bits of banana and toast. She did get it stuck in her throat a couple of times and I just tipped her upside down and it fell back out. So even if the "worst" does happen, it's not really a big deal.

Pheebe · 16/04/2008 20:36

6 months seems awfully early to me but thats what all the websites seem to say

cmotdibbler · 16/04/2008 20:43

I gave DS finger food from 6 months - actually we did BLW, so it was all finger food. A whole pear with the skin off is good as they just chomp at it and get a tiny bit at a time off is good as a starter. A whole banana is better than slices as again they tend to mush it themselves.

Ask your HV for a demo on how to deal with choking if you are really worried, but DS only ever gagged (rather than choked) and sorted it out himself.

nobodysfool · 16/04/2008 20:53

If your worried about the choking thing try these........

Pheebe · 16/04/2008 20:55

if we went with blw with ds2 he'd be eating steak and chips by now i reckon by the way he stares and grabs will offer him some banana tomorow and stop being a wus

thanks guys

DS aged about 6.5 months did eat steak and chips when out with us. We did get some funny looks as he sucked the steak to death !

Pheebe · 16/04/2008 22:04

nobodysfool, thats brill, have just ordered one

cmotdibbler - a steak sucking baby maybe in a couple of weeks then...if ds2 could grab my dinner plate he would...think he's going to be a good eater

also not sure if i should have, but i froze grapes when we were going on a trip in the car and put them in the mesh feeder. IT kept dd entertained for ages!
