currently weaning my 7mo. They do great with purée’s but anything thicker or with bits they point blank refuse, spit it up/ out and push it away from them. I’ve tried several times with different consistencies. HV advices to just keep trying which I am doing but I want them to enjoy food not become so distressed when eating.

any advice?

Not really doing blw due to on going swallowing / choking difficulties lo has - our anxiety couldn’t handle much more and hv had said not doing blw is okay

I know you say about not wanting to do BLW but it's advised to add in finger foods from 6 months even if weaning with purees. Anything can be finger food including mashed foods.

Are you under a paediatrician for the swallowing difficulties? This will need to be addressed as obviously baby can’t stay on smooth purées forever. They will be able to advise the best way to wean - health visitors don’t have this kind of knowledge so won’t be of much use.

I always suggest an infant first aid course to all weaning parents, you will feel more confidant and will be able to tell the difference between choking and gagging, and what to do in an emergency.

We are. We’re under speech and language for swallowing and ENT team for floppy larynx.

I’ve done an infant first aid course already due to the choking!

just wanted to see if others have any tips that helped them when he came to transitioning to different textures x

We’ve done some finger foods like avocado, banana’s, anything soft really which lo plays with and will have bits of but for actual meals, they have fruit porridge in the morning at a thicker than purée consistency. Then blended meal for dinner or tea, which is usually what we eat which they’re fine with. But trying to add lumps over the last 2 weeks has resulted in spitting, pushing food away and becoming really upset during meal times which we really don’t want.

My dcs didn't like unexpected lumps in otherwise smooth food which is why finger foods went down better with them (alongside the puree). Your lo is still very young though so there's plenty of time to get to grips with more solid foods.

Fingers crossed they get used to the lumps😂 I’ll just keep trying. I have to return to work soon so hopefully by that point they might be a bit better with the lumps as i know the childminder will have more than our lo to monitor food wise

My little one wouldn't take chunkier textures til he was 8 months but he did take finger foods. Toast is your friend at this point 😅

My first couldn't abide lumpy food until he was around 12 months but he did have Tongue tie. He could happily munch on toast or Cheese Straws though.
