Hi guys,

I'm so confused. When do I wean my little girl? The books say 6 months but my friend has weaned her little boy from about 4 months (poss earlier)

She's really interested in people's food and if you're close enough tries to steal it off us.

Is there a right or wrong with this?

she is not that old yet , is she?

weaning is recommended to start at 26 weeks .. and weaning too early is not always a good idea.

she is interested in everything, i should think, not just food.

NHS , Doh & WHO are all recommending 26 weeks

also, if you wait until 6 months or so , you can do babyledweaning

there is no window of opportunity you will miss if you hang on.

cheers Lulu - she's 12 weeks on weds! It's flown by!! haha.

Just wanted to check.

Is there things I can give her, ice cream or something so she gets to have a little taste of something? Also she's really into water at the mo, can she have juice in it (as long as it's unsweetened etc)

nooooooooooooooo!!!!

please, don;t !!

she is a baby

all she needs is milk, milk and more milk

she does not know food or juice exists or tastes different to milk

she is not missing out

there is no place in a 12 week olds diet for ice cream, even a taste.

her digestive system is designed to cope with milk, you cannot see if it is mature enough to cope with anyhting else

if she is seeming unsettled or hungry, then just give as much milk as she wnats.

12 weeks is way to early.

luvaduck · 04/04/2008 13:50

no and no
nothing except milk until at the VERY earliest 4 months...better to wit 'till nearly 6
milk will satisfy all her needs and anything else could actually harm her kidneys, immune system etc, so need to rush
when =you do start weaning you'll wish you'd waited a bit longer - such a faff!!

Lulumama · 04/04/2008 13:51

i would not even give water, milk is her food and drink , her stomach is small, and filling it with water, when she needs milk might make her seem hungrier IFYSWIM

LuckySalem · 04/04/2008 13:51

so just milk and water then and 6 months is the best time?

Cheers lulu!

Health Visitor told me to give her water cos she gets hard stool. can it damage her?

OP posts:
Lulumama · 04/04/2008 13:53

n o,water won't damage her at all.

just if she is hungry, it won;t satisfy her. if it is just to help her poo, then it is ok

what milk is she on?

LuckySalem · 04/04/2008 13:55

she's on farleys first milk. We did give her the 2nd milk for a while cos she was ALWAYS hungry. She goes through 7 sometimes 8- 8oz bottles a day now but cos of the hard stool I though best to switch her back down.

um, really not ice cream!

at this age she's using her mouth to explore the world, so toys with different materials and textures to suck are exciting - try the teethers you can put in the fridge.

There's absolutely no need for her to have juice - in fact unless she's constipated or it's really hot where you are there's no need for her to have water either.

NatalieJane · 04/04/2008 13:58

Hiya Lucky, everyone has already given all the advice, so just wanted to say hi! Not seen you for a bit, 12 weeks already? It seems like yesterday!

Hope you are all well

Lulumama · 04/04/2008 13:59

second milk can be harder on the tummy, so first milk might be fine for now. sounds like she is having a growth spurt

as long as she is pooing without being constipated, even if her poo is hard, it is ok

LuckySalem · 04/04/2008 14:01

yeh she's stopped being constipated now so we're sticking with the first stuff.

Cheers all, I'll just have to wash her bottles quicker!! haha
