ds2 is nearly 5 months & i'm currently giving him baby porridge (the powder one in a box) he eats the whole box within just 2 or 3 mornings so just wondering if he can have instant porridge made with hot water? any comments gratefully recieved

not sure - I thought porridge contained gluten, which isn't recommended until 6 months (not sure about baby porridge).

Divastrop · 02/04/2008 16:31

i wouldnt give anything containing gluten before 6 months.he could just be having a growth spurt and will eat less in a few days?

msappropriate · 02/04/2008 16:33

a lot of the baby porridges have oats in them which have gluten. The baby food manufacturers don't adhere to baby food advice.

Lulumama · 02/04/2008 16:34

nope, gluten is an issue

also, if he is hungry, i would offer more milk rather than food, sounds like he is eating a lot of porridge, and for a less than 5 month old, milk and lots of it should be his main source of nutrition

and always offer milk before food and do not give anything with gluten in before 6 months.

NorthernLurker · 02/04/2008 16:34

I would avoid ready brek cos of the gluten. Have you seen the plum baby range of 'super' porridge - the plain one is gluten-free - I think. That comes in a bit bigger bag. DD3 has that quite a lot and I find a bag goes a long way. I do mix it with pureed fruit though so I suppose that helps?

Also instant porridge not made for babies may be high in salt. I'd steer clear if I were you and take the advice here re offering more baby milk.

The current guidelines say milk only until 6 months - he really is too young for solid food. He needs more milk, I'm afraid!

fairy15 · 02/04/2008 17:27

thanx for your advice as i said any comments gratefully recieved. i know the guidelines state 6 months but every baby is different & i'm going with 'mothers instinct' his still getting plenty of milk & i feel that this is right for him. i did'nt rush into to it i waited to see if it was a growth spurt. i really do appreciate what you are saying.
