Just making some purees in preperation for weaning and in my Annabel Karel book it says not to freeze avocado's, or bananas... My mil has frozen bananas successfully for smoothies, anyone know the reason why?

is it not cos they go black when exposed to air

Lulumama · 01/04/2008 20:00

jsut as easy to get a ripe one and mash it as you need it...?

jennster · 01/04/2008 20:11

Because it's very oily?

Washersaurus · 01/04/2008 20:12

DH muttered something about water content and not being able to freeze them quick enough to retain their cell structure...

I have the AK family recipe book and she says you can freeze (unpureed) bananas for smoothies.

Just googled it and you can freeze as a puree. If you want to stop it discolouring add lemon juice. Much easier to mash prn

..was supposed to say Karmel, not karel.

Oh right I see... Yeah well usually I would just mash it fresh at the time except I bought a load of veggies to make puree's with and I got a 2 pack of avocados not realising they don't freeze. I don't like them and neither does dh so was just wondering why cause I don't want them to go to waste
Not weaning ds for 2-4 weeks yet so can't really use them now iyswim.

I used to freeze them once pureed mixed with banana - did it all the time with no fuss!

Dalrymps · 01/04/2008 20:48

Ahhhhhhhh so thats banana and avocado, whats AK on about then? Well if you did it then I might just try and if it looks weird when I thaw it i'll just chuck it. Can't see a problem with it myself though, I thought you could freeze most things... It also says in her book you can't freeze melon but you can buy frozen melon balls?!

Would take anything Annabel Karmel says with a pinch of salt
