Weaning

8 month old barely wants to eat and when does is constipated badly

MY 8 month old DD hasn't taken great to weaning, doing a mixture of BLW and pouches. She isn't really interested in anything anymore other than a sandwich of which most ends up on the floor. She has been permanently constipated and groaning in pain, I even stopped for a few days and only gave her pears and prunes (had to squeeze the pouch into her mouth would not take it from a spoon) but as soon as she has any other food again she is constipated.

I'm finding it really difficult and she appears behind for her age. Any tips for easy recipes for constipated fussy baby?

Not a doctor so definitely follow this up with a GP but we went through similar and at this age constipation is little to do with diet and more that the gut hasn't developed enough yet to cope with digesting all food.
Your child will eat until they are full/ don't want anymore and won't overeat like us adults.
We ended up giving movicol or lactulose occasionally upon GPs advice to stop it becoming painful and now everything is great.
Good luck

I’m assuming you’re giving her water when she has food?

Maybe try more fruit and veg before you move onto bread. Melon, cooked apple and pear, mashed veg etc.

Don’t stress too much though, my DS didn’t eat much at all at that age.

@MissFlimpkin thanks I will contact the GP to see if they think it's worth giving her something to help ease it.

@DuploTrain Yes I always offer water in her sippy cup and throughout the day, sometimes she has a few sips but mostly spits it out. I started off with lots of fruit and veg but she stopped eating it so tried to mix it up and give her other things.

@hubb26 how are you both getting on now?

@CadyEastman thanks for checking in...the GP gave us lactulose which definitely helps her when she has it and she becomes regular again, but as soon as we stop giving it the constipation returns again and GP said not to give it to her all the time. Still trying to give lots of prunes and pears.

Still very hit and miss (mostly miss) with what she eats. This morning she didn't want any of her breakfast (eggy bread and yogurt) other than a few strawberries.

No advice as we are having the exact same problem (down to only giving pear and prune purées). She moans most of the night in her sleep if we try anything else, so I just keep breastfeeding and hoping this will gradually stop.

I'm glad lactulose is helping a bit. Can I ask what milk she's on? Sometimes they can affect constipation.

You could try a ripe banana cut up in little chunks. Plenty of water. I might try an inch of fresh juice with little bits.
