Does ready brek contain milk?

I know I sound daft but my 1yr old has milk intolerance. The allergen list on the box doesn't say milk, but then another part says may contain milk. Just wondering what you would do if you were me?

If that was me I wouldn't risk it

Groovee · 26/09/2023 11:44

The may contain milk is a legal thing. They need to say it as it's maybe made in a factory with milk in it.

Devilsmommy · 26/09/2023 11:45

@Groovee that's what I thought but then do I risk giving my little one some?

My cmpa ds used to react to ready brek so no I wouldn’t risk it

Studies have shown that up to 10% of "may contains " can contain the ingredient.

My son has an ige milk allergy (needs an epi pen) so we never give May Contains.

However, I know many parents who have children with more mild milk issues (rash or diarrhoea if a lot I'd eaten) who give them.

@Alloveragain3 see mine isn't full blown allergy, just stomach issues when eaten dairy. That's why I wanted to know how others navigate the may contain bit

I would give a "may contain" to a child with a mild intolerance but not with an anaphylactic allergy, so I think it depends where your DC is on that scale. Can you ask doctor or HV what they'd advise you do?

Devilsmommy · 26/09/2023 11:54

@SapphireOpal yes it's a mild intolerance, not full blown allergy. I'm in two minds about whether I should give it or not you see

Actually in this case, I'd just give him normal porridge rather then ready brek to avoid the issue. But for things that aren't so easily substitutable, I'd risk an intolerant child with a "may contain"

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/09/2023 11:56

Can you use fine milled porridge oats instead? Do it yourself in a blender? That way, you’re sure.

Devilsmommy · 26/09/2023 12:02

@MrsSkylerWhite I do have dairy free porridge but he won't eat it, I could try blending those oats and seeing if he takes it, worth a shot. Thanks

Mine has intolerance not allergy and was okay with ready brek. Not to say yours would be but I didn't find issues myself!

Devilsmommy · 30/09/2023 11:23

@HAF1119 funny how intolerance works as you said your little one could eat ready brek. I tried mine with some and straight away he got a bad stomach 😞 Weetabix it probably is then😂
