Am I feeding DS enough?

He's 7 months and I've been weaning since just before 6 months.

He's now on 3 7oz bottles of formula a day, and has greek yoghurt and mashed banana in the morning, plus toast soldiers. Lunch is some veg (broccoli florets, carrot sticks, that sort of things), cheese cut into sticks, rice cakes, fruit in sticks etc.

Tea is usually a fruity custard pot or similar. I give him that because if I try a more complex meal (pasta, potato and cheese etc) have noticed he wakes up at 4am quite unhappy.

So really he's not eating that much at all. But his nappies are incredible (at least three disgustingly smelly ones a day, up from one!) and as I say he wakes up at night if I offer more structured meals. Feel I'm not doing this right but don't know what to change.

But he's really not eating much,

As far as the milk goes 20oz sounds right. It sounds like he's doing really well with the finger food too. A rule of thumb i try to go by is 2-3 servings of carbs from either cereal, bread, pasta or mash; 3 servings of veg or fruit and 1 serving of protein a day.

All babies have different sizes of appetite and it sounds like you are giving him lots of good food and he can just choose how much/little he wants to eat.

Have you got the annabel karmel book? That's useful cos her recipes give you portion sizes, so that might put your mind at ease when you see how much an average baby may eat.

If you are giving him access to a good variety of finger foods he will eat as much as he likes + this is 'enough'! You can't make him take more than he wants. He is getting plenty of milk too which is his his main source of calories for now anyway.

FWIW from what you describe it sounds like he's eating really well

Good advice candy girl. I'll tell me friend about that.

Had DS weighed today and he'd put on a pound in three weeks. HV asked me what he was eating, I told her and she told me off!

Said he should be eating the breakfast he's already having, plus two proper cooked meals and desserts a day, AND snacks.

The weight gain was OK, she said, but he needs more. If his weight gain's OK how can he need more?

Have encountered this woman before and normally would not trust her to tell me the time correctly, but now feel a tad undermined.

Oh, and gave him some baked sweet potato and cream cheese last night as well as fruit puree - and he woke up upset at 4am!

Then ignore her and carry on with what you are doing, moorhen! You know your child better than she does. And since his weight gain is fine, then there is no need to change what you are doing!

My ds is 7 months I don't think he eats half of what yours does (couldn't tell you how much milk he has as he is b/f, but certainly has more than three feeds per day, more like 6). But he is content and can go through the night without a feed, and is putting on weight - so I'm not worried

If giving him more food is upsetting him then it suggests to me he doesn't need or want it yet. There is a saying (overused, but still relevant), "food is fun until they're one" - I often repeat that to myself when I'm worried he's not eating enough!

Your HV is talking nonsense, surely? 1lb in weeks is LOADS at this age. Sounds like you know what to do for the best for your son. Hang in there.

Hi i also have a 7 month old, we were giving him fruit for tea and was finding that he was waking up also unhappy at about 9pm (he has always slept though since 14weeks)We worked out it was the kind of fruit making him upset so as a rule we dont give him pear or apricot for pudding at tea time

Your little boy is doing really well on the finger foods, he is defo getting enough food i'd say with the weight gain so just ignore the stupid women.

my little boys food routine usually goes like this

Breakfast - porridge,weetabix or banana +yogurt
Lunch - some sort of meat or fish + veg carbs, pud- fruit or yogurt
Dinner - vegs + pud he will have some finger foods when sitting at table with us, ie cracker , philly, veg sticks

He is currently on 3 8oz bottles and weighs 18lbs
