What milk do I use for an exclusively breastfed baby's baby rice if I don't want to express??

Should I just use cooled boiled water or formula or must I bite the bullet and do some expressing????

How old is your little one? if you are just starting weaning the amount you will need is easily hand expressed.

To start I got the top of a baby bottle (weren't using them for anything else!) and hand expressed enough milk to mix the baby rice. but we didn't use it for long because we moved onto purees (not everyones cuppa I know) and ended up putting a little baby rice into the puree so not needing the expressed milk.

hope that helps a bit..

How old is your baby?

gigglewitch · 01/03/2008 19:45

I used cooled boiled water for my dc, as they were bf and df!

beautifuldays · 01/03/2008 19:46

if baby is 6months plus just use cows milk

MamaMaiasaur · 01/03/2008 19:46

I started with EBM but switched to cows milk within a few weeks for mixing and cooking etc (not for drinking). That was at about 7 months.

btw, did the same as jen, we moved on to fruit and veg purees quite quickly so the baby rice went into that to thicken esp the fruity ones.
There's no need to express for the baby rice if you don't want to.

I used to just lean over the bowl and squirt some milk straight in

calsworld · 01/03/2008 19:53

I just used cooled boiled water as I found expressing difficult and DS didn't seem to mind, HV recommended it (and I have a good one ).

DS also had some shocking gastroenteritis (sp?) at about 9 months and lost loads of weight and I went back to rice (and porridge) made with water before reintroducing dairy and it served us both really well.

calsworld · 01/03/2008 19:54

Wallace, that's brill! Mine used to go in all sorts of directions!!

canadianmum · 02/03/2008 19:32

thank you all, my dd is 5.5 months and had her first bit of baby rice today. I only have enough expressed milk in the freezer for a week or two which I guess should last until the fruit and veg purees,.

wallace - talk about fresh milk unfortunately my milk is like calsworld - totally uncontrollable!!!

If you don't want to give cows milk yet because of the risk of allergies, then rice milk would be perfectly suitable for this.

phlossie · 03/03/2008 15:48

I used to just get a clean cup each morning when I was doing the morning feed and found that the milk flowed really easily while ds was feeding from the other side.
I think it's just a taste thing - the baby rice will still taste the the milk your baby's used to.

Or you could use breastshells for this purpose.
